dandannieldanok Posted 20 July 2006 Posted 20 July 2006 Zidane has been fined just over £3,000 and banned for 3 games. However because he is retiring he will have to spend three days working with Fifa. Materazzi has been fined just over £2,000 and banned for 2 games.
Ultra Posted 20 July 2006 Posted 20 July 2006 The fines are a joke - ridiculously low. And why is Materazzi being suspended for "provocation". It wasn't as if he was the only offender in the tournament..

DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 I think it's a great outcome. Zidane copped more obviously cos physical violence won't be tolerated, but it's also sent a clear message that over-the-top slurs and provocations are also unnecessary.
Daggers Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 It is a pathetic token punishment. Is it a deterrent to players from doing similar? No. Will kids gasp in shock and awe at the gravity of it? No!

Will they be laughing all the way to the bank as they are paid to attend chat shows during their suspension?
Fez of Mahrez Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 Hasn't Zidane retired from all football anyway?? That's like poking someone after they're dead (and not in the necrophiliac way).

MC Prussian Posted 21 July 2006 Posted 21 July 2006 Pfftt... All in all, pretty ridiculous. First of all, why making such a big fuss about it, why calling it "Headbutt Affair"? Why do we need such pathetic stories put on the front pages of newspapers? There has always been rivalries, duels, pressure and childish-like players on the pitch and it'll probably never end, because that's what the competition is making out of you. As the outcome has shown, it was all just a simple play staged by the FIFA and its associated press. And then they mourn the lack of role models... How easy is that with all those spoilt brats on the pitch? Where has the honour gone to play for your team and your nation? The Sahara? :pinch: What this signals to me is that it'll give "offended" football players (whatever that's supposed to mean) a blank cheque to do whatever they feel like in order to retaliate against "offenders", all you need for that is a good lawyer and a few quid to pay it. What has the world come to? 2000 to 3000 £? They'll be both laughing at the verdict, it won't itch them that much with the salary they both have. I'd like to see the FIFA dish out fines to all the great penalty box divers in the world... After all, it's only fair play, innit?
