cisono Posted 6 August 2006 Posted 6 August 2006 I have decided to grow a bit of a vegetable garden this year. Since my garden is non-existent (well, can you call a square metre a garden?!?!), I am growing organic tomatoes in pots around the house. Now, so far so good, but... the tomato plants are growing wildly (especially since I started feeding them) and they are doing very well but... not one tomato in sight, in fact, not one flower either. What's going on!?!?!?!? Any suggestions?

cisono Posted 6 August 2006 Author Posted 6 August 2006 Most leading supermarkets do now stock tomatoes... Really? The organic tomatoes I've seen in UK supermarkets mostly come from Spain or Israel/Morocco or even farther afield. I was hoping to make the most of this incredible summer by growing my own organic ones this year! And... there is no comparing the taste of a tomato (or fruit) just picked to one that was picked a week ago (usually unripe)! Plus, how about the satisfaction element?

I refer you back to the... you haven't actually grown any tomatoes.. element! Seriously, best of luck with it. My grandad just to grow tomatoes and they were lovely.

My grandad just to grow tomatoes and they were lovely. Yeah, tell me about it, no tomatoes so far and I have had to continue buying them, which is not great. Also, my rocket salad is not "rocketing". The few leaves that are out there do not look like rocket salad at all and won't grow past a couple of cm. I am seriously considering complaining to the lady that sold me all these organic seeds!!! Thanks for the wishes. Maybe next time round I'll get some actual tomatoes out of the whole vegetable garden experience!

Most people I know who well in to growing stuff (I say stuff advisedly) have over the years shunned conventional wisdom as their own experimentation and experience has given them better results. Basically, try different things and eventually you'll get there and know what you're doing in the future.

What's going on!?!?!?!? Any suggestions? i guess you're giving them tomato food? if yes, stop until you first lot of flower trusses show. try giving them a bit of a mist of water, the air in a house can be very dry, even without the central heating on. you could also put some gravel in the bowl that the pot's sitting in, this'll hold water and it'll evaperate up through the plant humidifying it. also reduce the size of the plants taking off a few of the side shoots, this'll make it think it's been nibbled by a goat or summat, and it'll think it ought to put some flowers on so there's a next generation of tomato plants. Perhaps Stez has the answer... Only Smarties have the answer. <_<
Scow Posted 7 August 2006 Posted 7 August 2006 Don't bother growing them. Instead have some Bruschetta from Bella Italia. Kayteh will vouch for it's greatness.
