Beckham to be left out

From bbc sport...

David Beckham's name will be missing when new England manager Steve McClaren names his first squad on Friday.

The 31-year-old, who stepped down as captain in June, had an Achilles injury but returned to action in a friendly for Real Madrid on Thursday.

However, BBC Five Live's Jonathan Legard understands that Beckham will not be in the squad to play Greece in a friendly at Old Trafford on 16 August.

McClaren will announce his backroom staff and squad at 1500 BST.

The new England manager has already revealed that Chelsea defender John Terry will take over as captain from Beckham.

After stepping down following England's World Cup exit to Portugal, Beckham expressed his desire to carry on playing for his country.

However, it appears that McClaren will stamp his authority on the new England regime by leaving out the Real Madrid midfielder.

"Beckham may have wanted to continue to represent his country but Sven-Goran Eriksson's successor clearly has other ideas," reports Legard.

"The FA is making no comment but I understand from other sources that Steve McClaren's England plans do not include adding to Beckham's 94 caps.

"I understand a recall is not completely out of the question but is highly unlikely."

It is not expected that Beckham will announce his retirement from international football.

Aside from dropping Beckham, McClaren is not expected to make widespread changes to the squad that travelled to Germany for the World Cup.

Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe, controversially dropped in favour of Arsenal teenager Theo Walcott, is expected to be in the squad.

West Ham's Dean Ashton has been widely tipped for a first call-up, while Walcott will play for the Under-21s instead.

Choice between Becks and Lennon... easy.

Becks had his chance and you simply cant compromise the strength of the team to include somone on the base of their name, Lennon is the better player that simple.

I heard the choice was made easier when he found out that Maybury was Irish and had already played a competitive game for them!!! :P:D

Beckham has a slight injury though, thats why he hasnt been picked.

No the reason is that Steve McClaren wants the team to 'go in a new direction' and said in the news conference that he spoke with David last monday and notified him of his decision and told Becks that he was planning for the future and to go in a new direction.

So it's not cos he is injured, its because McClaren wants to mould a squad together that will probably play at the Euro 2008 and Beckham won't be doing this and nor will Campbell and David James.

Whats the point in playing them in the friendlies, if they wont be doing anything in the real tournaments?

Thank God. I just hope this means the end for Beckham to play for England again, and not come back after this friendly or anything. Get rid of the rest of the deadwood as well, ie Lampard and Neville. There is no point in keeping them in the team. We need the people who are likely to play in the next Euro and WC to get as much international experience as possible.

Also I see Venables is to be McClarens assistant. Why? He had his chance 10 sodding years ago. This makes me sick. We won't win anything with these 2 in charge.
