Thracian Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 There are still people about who enjoy agood book and one I'm enjoying is the Michael Caine autobolgraphy, What's It All About." We've just entered F4 CUP Into the Italian Job rally, all decked out in it's new FA Cup livery, and having recently got a copy of the video The Italian Job, on which the rally is based, I was then drawn to the book. It's very David Niven in style and a thoroughly entertaining insight into Caine's life. There is nothing of the tedious, "Then I did this, then I did that ...." but instead a whole series of anecdotal insights, brilliantly related in an easy, invariably amusing manner. For instance Caine talks of being involved as the only white man in a Jamaican group making fruit pies and jam doughnuts... He says the Jamaicans used to play a game with the ring-doughnuts "but I never joined in cos I knew I'd lose..." It also "put him off ring doughnuts for life!"

Dr The Singh Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 It makes you wonder what the game was... You got a dirty mind cisono!!! But then again so must i have I
lookwhaticando Posted 17 August 2006 Posted 17 August 2006 It makes you wonder what the game was... Dunno, but it sure sounds fun....

Think i'll give this one a miss , Autobiographies very rarely appeal to me and especially ones about the lives of actors and mimes who spend their own lives pretending to be someone else. And as for the david niven example i thought it was now common knowledge that his family had said that it was a complete fabrication and that he was a compulsive liar. However much i disliked her . it would take someone of the stature of Margaret Thatcher for me to be interested in what anyones life had been about . (eg the downing street years, expect you have read that) Taking it a stage further , how on earth people take pleasure or indeed are interested in the likes of "the spud faced nipper" Wayne Rooney's life to date is completely beyond me , but then i am a miserable old b*st*rd Pleased if you are enjoying the book thracian , but i should take it all with a pinch of salt if i were you though after all actors are paid to deceive aren't they? By the way , this made me laugh

Mentioning it recently to a few friends I didn't realise that some of the sewer-and--sluice racing scenes for the Italian Job were filmed at Baginton airport and that some or all of the minis used were specially reinforced for the filming and later buried somewhere in the Coventry area.

I've got a holiday coming up in october and holidays are about the only time i can get through books these days as there always seems to be too many other distractions , but if i see a copy in the library or lying about somewhere i might give it a try ( its not something i would be inclined to buy) , but as i say auto biographies are rarely my choice of read and i really would have to be very interested in the particular person concerned to be tempted. i tend to pass them by in the same way as I do cook books and DIY books a good quote by donal henahan, " next to the writer of real estate advertisements , the autobiographer is the most suspect of prose artists" Cynical I know but i believe not far from the truth

I dislike Ashley Cole intensely. He's replaced previous title-holders such as Nicholas Anelka, Rio Ferdinand and Kieron Dyer as the current holder of my Most Violently Hated Footballer commemorative plaque. The whole "oh Chelsea want me, oh Arsenal are such cruels masters, oh woe is me" scenario was entirely of his making (and that of the vile turds that advise him). David Dein and Arsene Wenger - make a stand. **** England and make him rot in the Arse reserves.

You've given me a headache of choices now for reading in my holiday autobiogfest , I'd narrowed it down to , Anthony Worral Thompson, Richard Madeley, Jools Oliver and "beardy" Bill Frindall. Who all recently have deemed that we need to know their life stories, and now it seems you've tempted me with Ashley Cole's blistering account of his life so far. I think i'll plump for old beardy Bill Frindall as the life of a cricket score keeper must be so full of swashbuckling derring-do that it would surely satisfy anyone's lust for vicarious adventure. And no doubt there will be lots of amusing anecdotes of cakes and statistical errors that make one roll with laughter but ta for the tip-off that the eagerly awaited tome is available anyway NW

Why, while Paolo Di Canio and the poison dwarf still walk this earth?
Nationwider Posted 20 August 2006 Posted 20 August 2006 Why, while Paolo Di Canio and the poison dwarf still walk this earth? Good point, well made. Four gaps to fill in for the ultimate "Boo" team?..... -------------------- ??? ------------------- Gary Neville --- Ferdinand - ??? -- Cole Dyer -------- Wise ---- ??? --------- ??? ----------- Anelka ---- Di Canio --------
lookwhaticando Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 Good point, well made. Four gaps to fill in for the ultimate "Boo" team?..... -------------------- ??? ------------------- Gary Neville --- Ferdinand - ??? -- Cole Dyer -------- Wise ---- ??? --------- ??? ----------- Anelka ---- Di Canio -------- I vote Riccardo for the goalkeeper. Was a cocky bastard @ Euro 2004. I think Robben would be my choice in left wing. His theatrics are second to none. I'm also tempted to include Drogba for his diving/handballing crap. There's probably a whole host of Arsenal players that could fill in the gaps.
davieG Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 Good point, well made. Four gaps to fill in for the ultimate "Boo" team?..... -------------------- Barthez ------------------- Gary Neville --- Ferdinand - ??? -- Cole Dyer -------- Wise ---- ??? --------- ??? ----------- Anelka ---- Di Canio -------- For pissing up Muzzy's penalty kick when at ManU

Ultra Posted 21 August 2006 Posted 21 August 2006 surely the goalkeeper has to be harald schumacher Definitely! Michael Brown of Fulham has to be in there. I remember his dive which got Callum Davidson sent off and cost us a title. I also saw his attempt to break Ryan Giggs' leg yesterday. And Cristiano 'winker' Ronaldo and Darren Huckerby have to be in there too..
Thracian Posted 21 August 2006 Author Posted 21 August 2006 I saw Warnock on TV last night and it was great to see a manager with a bit of character showing a bit of good humour.
