golden gordon Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 Somehow Alan Shearer always came across as a boring bloke whatever he said or did , now it seems Steven Gerrard is desperate to take his place as the most boring player in football ( have you seen him in the persil ads). What is it about some people that just screams "boring". Is it the tone of voice or facial expression or what else ? These two men should have some charisma but if they have it is well hidden. Can anyone say what these people do wrong ?

It's not one thing but being monotonal doesn't help, when there is no change in the voice pattern you get no feeling, no insight added to that a mono expression and you get the appearance of a dull boring personality. Being in front of a camera doesn't help either, some people start off appearing boring due to nerves and a lack of confidence in front of the camera but develop into being quite acceptable. Then you have those at the other end of the spectrum that apppear lively and interested but their nerves come out as over excitement and you find they are actually saying sod all of interest. Well that's how I see it. Mind you Shearer is just plain boring and a hypocrite to boot
Steven Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 Mind you Shearer is just plain boring and a hypocrite to boot Agreed.

This boring characteristic is much harder to define as its somehow a "lack of something" rather than an identifiable trait , and while i agree with davieg about the monotone voice and lack of facial expression i'm still left feeling that there is another harder to place symptom of "boringness" ( if there is such a word) , or ennui which implies a tediousness about a person. i'm left wondering if the person really is a tedious , boring person or just one who has an inability to inspire while in conversation, i think i might be getting boring myself now
Suffolk_fox Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 Andy Murray - possible BBC Sports PERSONALITY of the year!! You would think that being in front of the camera fairly often like these guys are, they wouldn't be nervous! It appears that alot of sports people these days have had Charisma Bypass operations, compare this with some of the people from yesteryear. I think the sports world has in fact been overtaken by robots.... Tis the future I tell thee...

Suffolk_fox Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 He wont win, he hates the English, and he needs their votes to win. Little tw*t. I caught some American commentary of his match against Federer... "And the young Englishman takes the match!" Gotta love the Yanks....
Thracian Posted 19 August 2006 Posted 19 August 2006 i hope its joe calzaghe or ricky hatton but auntie beeb probably won't want a "non p.c." sportsman to win There's much in what you say. Characters like Ilie Nastase and John McEnroe have been discouraged and it's the same in football. With people getting booked for daft things like celebrating a goal all the reaction, the raw emotion is being squeezed out. It's the same everywhere, even at work. I'd never have got away with putting a brand new office car in a banger race now, that's for sure!.

Gotta love the Yanks.... I'm impressed! This time they managed to locate him on the right island... Apparently, they only study US geography, so everything father afield must be quite a bit fuzzy... Once, when I still lived in Italy, I met an American guy who played in the Ambassadors, a band that supports US troops stationed in Europe (i.e. he had been based in Germany for a year). I told him that I was going to Prague soon and he said they had a trip planned there soon as well. After a while he asked, "when is it that you are going to Hungary?"

I should read some of the answers that actual members of the British public give to questions( eg from dumb britain) posed to them on tv quiz shows before critising Americans . We must have some of the dumbest people in the world if these people go on tv or radio to show off their stupidity. Some of them make Jade "east anglias a foreign country innit" Goody look like Joan Bakewell http://www.geocities.com/kurtodrome/english/dumb.html

Alternatively, it must be performance anxiety affecting their brains (temporarily)... I have seen a similar programme with American participants...

In other words, I think the main difference between your example and mine is that the guy in question was not on a TV show, so he cannot claim it was the cameras!
