MOT'S

Just went to have my car MOT'ed down the most dodgy garage ever. Guy came back to me to tell me it had failed on something that i'd never heard of to do with the suspension. I never got to see this cos my car was back on the road. Have to get it fixed at that garage if I want to have a free retest. All adds up to corruption if you ask me. I bet they broke whatever on purpose and I'll never be able to prove it.

We should compile a list of "good garages" and "bad garages" here on FT....

:P

True cowboys wouldn't even bother breaking it... they'd just hope you believed them and take it back

They then charge you for work they didn't even do.

What are you going to do? Go elsewhere for a second opinion or believe them and hope they're not lying through their teeth?

Why choose that garage...or are you saying its dodgy SINCE dealing with them?

Its a vipers nest, if you get a good one, Keep em!

The way he was adding up a quote in his head and was quite worrying. He was like add that and then this and just plucked a random figure out of the air! I was like WTF!

I'm going to ask to see what's broke before they do anything. they always seem eager to get you out of sight!

Definately a sign of dodginess.

Proper types should show you what it is that's wrong, explain it if needs be.

I'm in the north east, don't know any garages and this was the only one that could do it today. I rang up 5 different ones and on the phone, the guy sounded the most mainstream so I thought bingo.

I know of garages back home where they would write you a certificate out without even looking at it  Don't think you can do that now, big brother and all...

He might just be very gifted at mental arithmetic... :P

Always a good idea...

NEVER take your car to a garage for MOT that also does repairs!!

Go to an impartial "no repair" MOT test centre.

North Leicester Testing Station for a start. Purely MOTs only! AND last time I took my car there he did free retests too so he didnt make his money that way!

Only my opinion of course!

There is a certain logic to your post. I would go for that, as long as they don't have a "recommended repair centre" or similar.

But I will stick to my old mechanic, which is best! :P

Bit of a trek for Collymore down from Newcastle though

But good advice.

proper garages will give you a failed notice when it returns from a test .. certificate either way ... detailing the failures if any and also an orange form giving any slight attentions in the future

just out of interest what did it fail on ?

Unless I've missed it Collymore has not actually mentioned precisely what the car failed on?

This IMHO is down to one of the following:

  1. An oversite on his part
  2. The garage has not provided written details of the fail

If the latter is the case then the garage should be reported to the Department Of Transport

Additionally if the garage will only accept cash payments demand (and refuse to leave without) a full VAT receipt

The guy told me in a thick gerodie accent that some thing had come off the suspension, as in come out of a hole and needed replacing, feck knows what, he then said I needed two rubber thingys on the suspension which needed replacing. It was £50 for the parts and £60 for labour. I never got a written report. I did get a peice of paper with the emmisions test. It's not signed and seems to have passed by loads.

e.g CO max limit 3.500 - actual value 0.095

HC max limit 1200 - actual value 160

Now i don't know what that means, but it looks like my old smoking beast passed with flying colours on that test. Would hate to see what you needed to fail that!

I've woke up on a mission and I'm going to demand for a written breakdown and also for them to show me the parts that need replacing. I'll wait there if I have too.

As for the VAT, got a feeling they might try and wack VAT on top of my quote anyway which I'll be mightly pissed off with.

Suspension Gators?? They tend to rip which is an MOT failure but not something you would notice while driving. £25 each seems reasonable TBH.

even if its the gaitors / bushes he should have still given you a big fat MOT fail certificate listing this officially otherwise this bloke is trying to con you out of money ... for instance when my sisters failed it listed everything failed on ... exhaust blowing from manifold / centre pipe / bald tyre

Any update Mr Collymore??

Don't leave us all in suspenders...

I went down and asked for a written quote. The guy said he would do me one then said he couldn't because the delivery man hadn't been yet so he didn't know any prices :(

He then promised me it would be done for a certain time and when I returned, some 15 year old chav was burning something off my suspension cos he couldn't get it off :(

They then had to send off for the part they had burnt off and about 2 hours later it was ready..

When I asked for the fail certificate from the MOT, the guy went sheepishly off to look, and then returned saying that he had accidentally given it to another customer by mistake! He reassured me that I didn't need one and it isn't mandatory or anything :(

hmmmm, I can safely say I will never be using that garage again :pinch:
