davieG Posted 8 September 2006 Posted 8 September 2006 From Sky Brighton have parted company with manager Mark McGhee after an acrimonious start to The Seagulls' League One campaign. Last month's 4-1 home defeat to Crewe saw fans voice their displeasure at the team, and Saturday's loss at Bristol City exacerbated tensions. Chairman Dick Knight confirmed it was a 'regretful' decision, but one that was taken in the club's best interests. "It was a regretful decision but unfortunately Mark lost the backing of the fans," Knight told Sky Sports News. "We need to rejuvenate the club and Mark accepts that - we took the decision for the good of the club." The former Millwall boss took charge of the South Coast club in October 2003 and led the team into The Championship after winning the then Division Two play-offs the following summer. However, relegation from The Championship at the end of last season prompted speculation over the Scot's future. "At the end of last season, a lot of people thought Mark would leave then, but I didn't think that was fair," added Knight. "A lot of fans have got on his back. We slipped down to 17th and it's vital we play in front of big crowds at the Withdean." Knight confirmed that first team coach Dean Wilkins will take caretaker charge, and will be assisted in that capacity by Dean White. On a possible long-term successor to McGhee, Knight added: "I have some thoughts on that [a replacement], but there have been no talks about it yet."

All the bumper stickers, pens, etc with 'The future's Marked Out' and he was gone 5 months later. The lesson that should be learned but hasn't been is that a club should NEVER base it's marketing on a manager or a player.
