davieG Posted 11 December 2004 Posted 11 December 2004 No not his goal scoring feats. A lot of people on here have criticised DC for playing too wide, well today we could have done with that. In my opinion the reason we lost was because we didn’t score (yes obvious I know but stick with it) whe we were on top.. Now nearly all our goals this season have come from midfield or from scowy. Today this was never going to happen the midfield just outside their box was like Oxford Street (London) at Christmas, not only did we have 3 central midfielders we also had scowy playing behind Blake. Now that’s not new as CL has had this formation in the last few games. The difference was that Connolly by going out to the wings took at least two players with him thus creating space in the centre and allowing the midfield to come through and score. I think that’s also why the midfield under performed. Disagree if you want I for one am not offended by differing views, maybe some else saw it differently. PS. The only good thing about losing is you get some cracking debates and differences of opinion, love it.
Anish Posted 11 December 2004 Posted 11 December 2004 I don't think we missed him at all really. Yes he does take a wide position and thus takes 1-2 defenders with him - but that could also happen if we played a wide left midfielder (Morris or Tiatto) who stuck out wide. With Nalis, Gudjonsson and Gemmill all in midfield - none of them wanted to go wide and thus congested/restricted our attacking options to 'straight down the middle'.
Wellman Posted 11 December 2004 Posted 11 December 2004 As soon as I left the stadium, I said to my dad that we missed connolly. Obviously not him scoring, but just him being around and pesting the oppositions defence. Blake and Scowy as a partnership didn't work because neither of them knew wether to go up header the ball.

He gets out wide and draws a man away from Gillespie to give Keith space. Stearman had a very good game but he found it difficult to support Gillespie and Gillespie didn't push on as much because he didn't want to leave Rich exposed.
Scow Posted 12 December 2004 Posted 12 December 2004 We missed his movement, that's for sure. Blake and Scowcroft are a shocking partership. Striking partnerships with no pace don't work.
Cobbo Posted 12 December 2004 Posted 12 December 2004 As I said in the players ratings: I think we missed Connolly Despite his lack of goals, we had been playing well and winning with him in the team. He has so much more class about him than the rest of our team and his ability to bring other players into the game is very important for us.

We missed him big time yesterday. Blake and Scowy were poor yesterday.
