dandannieldanok Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I can't believe they might favour Giles instead of Monty, the guy had the wood on 3 of the worlds best batsmen (inzi, khan and youssef) in the summer. Whilst Giles may add 20 runs to total he contributes very little in the shape of wickets. Whereas Monty makes up for his of runs with wickets. I hope Read starts the first test because he's a much better gloveman and he batted pretty well in the test series against Pakistan. As for Mahmood why oh why is he in the squad he's so inconsistent, I say get Leicestershires finest, Stuart Broad would do a more than decent job on the bouncy Ausrtalian wickets with his tall action and wicket-to-wicket bowling. Agreed 100%, I can see England giving the Aussies a run for their money but a home series win looms
Nationwider Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 Confirmed - Jones has won back the keeper's gloves and will play ahead of Read.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 Confirmed - Jones has won back the keeper's gloves and will play ahead of Read. Oh dear. Any word about Monty?

lcfc_jme Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 Confirmed - Jones has won back the keeper's gloves and will play ahead of Read. Saw this on SSN this morning and I thought I was still dreaming. Jones has a healthier average, but let's face it, he doesn't usually make a decent score, maybe once in 4 innings? And his glovework is not up to the standard of Read either. But the selectors clearly know what they're doing since they're professionals and experienced

lcfc_jme Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 That's putting it mildly..... I'd take more catches than he does. Putting it mildly indeed. I wouldn't want to offend people on here, as many are already sick of me being around and think I should leave/post much less frequently!! But yeah, you would take more catches than Jones. I think many non-cricketers would take more catches than Jones. He's not the greatest behind the stumps and catches like a flamingo (them birds what stand on one leg )
Milky Posted 12 November 2006 Posted 12 November 2006 jones must be fletchers little pet fellow seems a strange decison considering read is the the superior gloveman. however, i think they have taken the style of wickets into account. Sounds like they feel jones is better suited to the aussie tracks. he does have a quality cut shot to be fair.
Nationwider Posted 12 November 2006 Author Posted 12 November 2006 Oh dear. Any word about Monty? I can't believe they won't pick him, but maybe Read's exclusion is an indication they don't need a top class keeper if there's not going to be a top class attacking spinner in the side. Fletcher's plan seems to be to pack the side with batsmen and batting bowlers as far down as they can go. So, out with the Panesars and Reads, and in with the Giles's, Mahmood's and Jones's???
marko Posted 16 November 2006 Posted 16 November 2006 The reason Jones got in is he's big mates with Freddie and Fletch. Jones has been woeful in recent matches, whereas Read played well against Paksitan. I would be devastated if Monty P was dropped for Giles. Monty can win a match with his wickets whereas Giles just bowls to contain them with no real ambition to take wickets.
C-man Posted 17 November 2006 Posted 17 November 2006 Team for the first test is: A J Strauss, A N Cook, I R Bell, P D Collingwood, K P Pietersen, A Flintoff (Capt), G O Jones (Wkt), S I Mahmood / S Harmison, M J Hoggard, J M Anderson, M S Panesar. And i'll go for a drawn series.
Foxello Posted 17 November 2006 Posted 17 November 2006 Cant see any hope for us really. Aussies look too good and strong. Add to that our indifferent form of late and it dont look great
dugarry123 Posted 17 November 2006 Posted 17 November 2006 I think we're gonna get battered. They are well up for it over there and they were even talking about it when i was there in June and how they are going to batter us. Mcgrath always talks himself up! He's full of S***!
