Nationwider Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 England started their tour of Oz this morning with a truly inept one-day display against a President's XI. Link We probably shouldn't read too much into this as it was a 1-day warm up, but the usual suspects "shone".... Jones kept and missed an unbelievably easy catch, Saj Mahmood and James Anderson both bowled a load of crap, Freddie's captaincy was a bit mad (bowl first on a perfect pitch? three overs for Monty only???). It's probably just a clever plan to look sh*t early on and confuse the Aussies, but I'm a bit worried already, not least because on Sky this morning, they are speculating that England may drop Monty in favour of Ashley Giles and reinstate Geraint Jones as wicketkeeper. Anyway, poll question's at the top.
Master Fox Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 The Aussie's will smash England into the ground. We've got no chance
lcfc_jme Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I think all the signs point to us taking yet another hammering from our Kangaroo loving friends from Down Under
The Man Who Would Be King Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I don't see why we can't win. If we raise our game, and can take an early lead then we might just pull it off. you gotta be positive!! cm'on england

Joe. Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 We'll get absolutely battered to a pulp. 5-0 Australia I reckon, and I'm not joking. <_<
Guest Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I'm not very optimistic about this. Having lost the Ashes, and being on home soil, I think the Aussies will be more fired up than we could ever get.
Manwell Pablo Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 They are going to rip us limb from limb.
Stuliasz Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I think we're gonna get battered. They are well up for it over there and they were even talking about it when i was there in June and how they are going to batter us.

Although Glenn McGrath was saying before the last series they were going to win 5-0 and look what happened.

Lisa we both know the only thing that can save us is rain....no stop Torrential rain for a month. We have been shite since we won the Ashes.
Nationwider Posted 10 November 2006 Author Posted 10 November 2006 Probable team for the first test: Trescothick (is he going to be up to it mentally?) Strauss (ok, in reasonable form) Cook (no Ashes experience) Pietersen (erratic, not in the best form) Bell (Aussies had the measure of him last time) Flintoff (fitness worries) Jones (no runs for ages, aversion to catching the cricket ball) Giles (no cricket for ages, not a threat) Mahmood (way too erratic for Test cricket) Harmison (no consistency for ages) Hoggard (Aussies ripped him apart 4 years ago in Oz) Ok, that's a negative viewpoint, as several of those players are potentially matchwinners, but it's not good is it?

It was the last glimmer of hope I had. We've as much chance of winning the Ashes as I have winning X Factor.
Leonisco Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 Agree with everything said so far. It really hurts to say it, as normally i'm pretty optimistic, but we haven't got a cat in hell's chance this year. We've got too many injuries, too many players out of form and the Aussies will be so fired up for this.
Shum Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 It's going to be tough. I do however think that Panesar and Collingwood should play in the first test.
The People's Hero Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 Why did my post in this thread get deleted? Absolutely bizarre. It was probably one of the most sensible things I've ever posted. And in an area I know something about.

Joe. Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 Trescothick is a joke at the moment and no way does he warrant a place in the team. His batting performances have been nothing more than woeful. Mahmood is another who definitely doesn't deserve a place. His bowling is so temperatmental and yesterday's performance against the President's XI saw him pick up an economy of over 10. That really is terrible. Monty Panesar should easily warrant his place in the side. He bowls quite consistently and always seems to get a great wicket haul in tests
The People's Hero Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 what did you say WO02ERS? No point, it'd only get deleted again. And I thought I was unmoderatable.
Bert Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I think 3-0 to the Aussies. We'll be lucky to win one.
Tommeh Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 the best we can hope for is a draw so at least we keep the Ashes no chance of winning though.
marko Posted 10 November 2006 Posted 10 November 2006 I can't believe they might favour Giles instead of Monty, the guy had the wood on 3 of the worlds best batsmen (inzi, khan and youssef) in the summer. Whilst Giles may add 20 runs to total he contributes very little in the shape of wickets. Whereas Monty makes up for his of runs with wickets. I hope Read starts the first test because he's a much better gloveman and he batted pretty well in the test series against Pakistan. As for Mahmood why oh why is he in the squad he's so inconsistent, I say get Leicestershires finest, Stuart Broad would do a more than decent job on the bouncy Ausrtalian wickets with his tall action and wicket-to-wicket bowling.
