cisono Posted 15 December 2006 Posted 15 December 2006 What is the difference between Crumpets and Pikelets? There seems to be some controversy on this one: Some opinions include: "Pikelet is another (regional) word for crumpet" "Adding to the crumpet (food version) / pikelet debate, we used to call them pikelets where I come from (South Yorks). However, up here in Scotland the crumpets tend to be a lot thinner and diagonally larger than their English counterparts, unless bought in a supermarket." From some blog: "The conversation fell into discussing the difference between a crumpet and a pikelet. Some believed the crumpet was in fact a pikelet. I reckoned a pikelet was a cross between a crumpet and a Scotch pancake. Some thought I was getting a pikelet confused with a Scotch pancake. Only Rich laughed when I asked if a pikelet was a chavvy crumpet." Not sure this sheds any light on it?
Suffolk_fox Posted 15 December 2006 Posted 15 December 2006 My mum calls crumpets Pikelets, but I think they are indeed more like Scottish Pancakes.
cisono Posted 15 December 2006 Posted 15 December 2006 My mum calls crumpets Pikelets, but I think they are indeed more like Scottish Pancakes. Hmm I have the same impression...
cisono Posted 15 December 2006 Posted 15 December 2006 My mum calls crumpets Pikelets, but I think they are indeed more like Scottish Pancakes. Sorry missed out the most important part: So we googled the matter to settle the dispute. Our findings are as follows: A pikelet is thinner and than a crumpet, even though in certain parts of Britain a crumpet is controversially described as a pikelet! And, and...turns out that what the English refer to as pikelets, (which as discussed are thinner versions of the more satisfyingly substantial crumpets), Antipodeans refer to as Scotch pancakes!! Furthermore, just to confuse matters, the Scots use the same ingredients for their version of 'crumpets' as they do for Scotch pancakes. In summation, the crumpet and pikelet are interchangeable terms, depending on where you are in the United Kingdom and indeed the world.
potter3 Posted 15 December 2006 Posted 15 December 2006 I don't like the chewy bit at the bottom <_< (or are they just the ones I have )
