Anish Posted 4 January 2005 Posted 4 January 2005 MON you are too young. I'd say Akinbiyi was worse- Lee didn't cos £5million and at least he helped Forest get promotion to the Premiership with a fair few goals.
Red Mist Posted 4 January 2005 Posted 4 January 2005 It depends whether we're talking innate ability, contribution, or value for money. Jason Lee was signed for £200k for the specific purpose of coming on late in games to provide physical presence and to hold the ball up. He had a truly dreadful first touch, but he wasn't bought for his talent. At the time Collymore was injured and our strikers were all quite short, so if we were defending a single goal lead, we'd clear it but it would just come straight back. We didn't have much money so he was a decent option and he initially fulfilled his purpose. He even developed a knack for coming on as a sub and scoring. He had some memorable moments, including grabbing the fourth in our 4-2 win at Filbert Street ( ). That same season, against Spurs, Ian Walker should have made an easy catch underneath a high ball but, seeing Jason charging towards him, completely shat himself and missed it, leaving him with a tap-in (and yes, he did score it!) - it was highly amusing. He was always great entertainment in his supersub role, causing mayhem for the opposition and providing great comedy as he charged about with boundless enthusiasm. He became quite a cult figure for a while. It sadly went sour when he started quite a few games in the 96/97 season when Kevin Campbell was injured and we couldn't afford a replacement. He was never good enough to be a starter and was never intended for this role. It was at this time that he became widely ridiculed and his confidence was shot. With Akinbiyi, on the other hand, you'd be looking for the finished article for £5m - it was a truly atrocious deal (I don't need to tell you this). If he'd cost £200k like Lee, I'm sure you lot wouldn't have reviled him. Overall Akibiyi has more ability but he just can't finish for toffee. When we played Stoke the other day a sitter fell to him but I just sat back completely relaxed, knowing that he would balls it up (which he duly did).
