Taylor quits England U21 position

Taylor helped England reach the Euro Under-21 finals

Peter Taylor has stepped down from his role as England Under-21 coach.

The 54-year-old was dividing his time between the under-21s and managing Crystal Palace, but said he wanted to concentrate on the Championship club.

"I can't do it anymore and devote my time to helping the team ahead of June's European Under-21 Championship in Holland," Taylor told BBC Sport.

"Anybody coming in would have to commit a lot to the job. I'm sad but I've had a great time with England."

He added: "I'm proud of having seen some players go on to the senior squad."

Taylor steps aside following his second spell with the under-21 side that began in 2004 - his first was between 1996 and 1999.

England reached this year's Euro finals after they beat Germany in a two-leg play-off, thanks partly to Theo Walcott's double strike in the away fixture.

Taylor's successor is set to be appointed before the friendly against Spain at Derby's Pride Park next week.

Names being touted for the role include Manchester City boss Stuart Pearce and Southend manager Steve Tilson, who was asked by Taylor to help with preparations for the qualifier against Moldova last August.

Peter, Peter, Peter. When will you realise - you could never do it anyway. :nono:

He is crap as a club manager, but I think as an international manager, he has had some great success.

Future England Manager? Discuss:

if he is one day england manager i may start to seriously question my support for the national side. It's a shocking thought, put Taylor really is such a complete twat!

Too late!

Stand-in boss Peter Taylor made him captain for a friendly against Italy in late 2000, a role he was handed on a permanent basis under Sven-Goran Eriksson.

Its weird that a bloke who is respected as a coach manages to be such a shite judge of players abilities when it comes to spending cash. I always thought he was a good coach but a real good one would have kept us up or would be doing better than he is at Palace. He is living off his brief stint as England national coach where he will always be known as the bloke who made Becks captain. His stint with the u-21s only looked better because Platt fooked this right up. IMO, he is shite and anyone could do well with the kids available in England.

I think he's a decent manager who lost control in a really bad way. I don't like the bloke for spending us almost into oblivion, but he's done well with the U21's and very well with Hull.

I approve of his efforts at Palace, too.

Has he done much there? I thought they were still floating about mid-table? I reckon he'll start to climb the table towards the end of the season and then challenge for a play-off spot next season. But yeah what's he done?

I approve of his efforts at Palace because I would dearly love for them to be relegated.

They're currently 14th, a bit of a comedown after finishing 6th last season.

Good stuff

He wasn't particularly bad at Under 21 level, but domestically, he's shit. And Palace (I hope) will start to notice that as well now as they gradually slide down the table...

A great season for a Leicester fan would be for Palace and Leeds to go down under the helm of two great managers

SP1 just said Stu Pearce has said he's going to do it part time

If he does I think this is moulding Pearce into the full team later on down the line.

Just what we need a good English manager with ALOT of passion and will let the players know that they are wearing the 3 lions.

I think it's a great move making Pearce boss. He really wants the job and he is English which is another good thing. He is definitely one of the better peopl in the game today and I think he could get the best out of the youngsters

Pearce accepts but do the Board of Directors at Manchester City?

He'll get a lot of stick if Manchester City's form tails off again, as it'll be linked with the dual-role situation.

Still, good luck to him. Hopefully he can do both jobs successfully.

I'd like him to succeed, he's a great fellow is our Psycho. ;)

The main reason Taylor left was that Simon Jordan did not want him their. I don't think Pearce would have the job if the board didn't back him.

But I agree when things go wrong this will be the first thing the media turn too.

What has Stuart Pearce ever achieved as a manager??!!

Its being idealic to think that such an obvious ex-England footballer who gave everything would be great at the helm, but I would be more interested in having a quality manager in charge regardless of nationality.

The u-21s isnt a great grroming ground anyway. Look how succesful Platt and Taylor have been!

I`d want a Brazilian in charge of England next so that he can tell the lads to express themselves and not play with so much fear. Picking an Englishman isnt always the best way forward as the last one nearly cost us our place at the last major event we played and the current one is doing his level best to make us miss out again.
