Stevosevic Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 this is more for the young lads + lasses on the site. me and a few mates are going on holiday this summer for a typical 'lads' holiday. heard a few things about Bulgaria, so we are considering it. its really cheap as pints are just 50p (but whats in them? ) compared to places like magalauf, ibiza etc... that are around £3.50 a pint just wondering if anyone has been? what are the beaches like? whats the nightlife like? is it heaving with girls? any feed back would be great chears

I dont know of anyone who went to Bulgaria but it must be worth it if its for a drinking cheap holiday surely?!

He loves it. I know a few Bulgarians (met around the world) and they are good fun (at least for Italians).
Vardinhio Posted 6 February 2007 Posted 6 February 2007 Looking to go there this summer aswell mate, Sunny Beach. It looks quality.
Alexikokopops Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 Stayed in Hungary at the edge of Lake Balaton last summer, that were pretty sweet.
Thracian Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 this is more for the young lads + lasses on the site. me and a few mates are going on holiday this summer for a typical 'lads' holiday. heard a few things about Bulgaria, so we are considering it. its really cheap as pints are just 50p (but whats in them? ) compared to places like magalauf, ibiza etc... that are around £3.50 a pint just wondering if anyone has been? what are the beaches like? whats the nightlife like? is it heaving with girls? any feed back would be great chears I went to Bulgaria a couple of years ago. Sorted my own trip rather than a package. Most holidaymakers end up in Sunny Beach which is a building site (sorry, emerging holiday development area) next to the delightful ancient coastal outcrop that is Nessebar. Bulgaria is emerging, and there'll be plenty of nightlife to be had in Sunny Beach, but it doesn't have the energy and atmosphere of Spain or the sophistication of Nice or Monte Carlo. But hiring a boat out of Nessebar would be fun. In Bulgaria I much preferred Varna which has an enormous beach which stretches around from the bottom of the city's main street and is lined with cafe's as far as the eye can see. It's certainly an option but Sunny Beach is the favoured hot-spot for the young. Bulgaria was until quite recently under Russian influence. The people have never been spoilt and most have to work extremely hard for low wages. But the land is full of fruit and wine and, certainly around Varna, or Byala as it is sometimes known, the young girls seemed slim, extremely fit and wonderfully pleasant, well mannered and good fun, in every sense. I certainly found myself wishing I was a teenager again. It is not easy outside of places like Sunny Beach dealing with the cyrillic alphabet. But English is now being taught in Bulgarian schools and many coastal and ski restort restaurants are employing young people who can speak some English, who want to speak English and are even posting their menus in English. I don't think the coast is the best part of Bulgaria - although there's a nice sporty resort at Albena a few miles north of Varna and other isolated pockets of fun like Sozopol at the Turkish end of the Black Sea. But the place to be and the place to holiday is in the ski resorts where both the sport and the apres ski are really taking off. Borovets is probably best now - being well established and having attracted huge amounts of investment but Bansko and Pamporova provide options and the fairly nearby ancient City of Plovdiv would be high on my list of places to visit. But perhaps not in the summer, I guess, at least not for young folk but worth an exploratory visit if you get the chance. Drink is cheap, especially if you ask around, so is transport providing you make arrangements with a friendly local taxi driver or use the bus. These buses are really frequent in the Sunny Beach area, and all along the coast, and are really cheap even for longish journeys. If you hire a car it is not recommended to head inland at night. Roads are being improved but there are real disasters waiting to happen because a pothole in their roads is quite likely to be a foot or more deep and pretty extensive. Also tourist ambushes are not unheard of at night on lonely roads. Nor would I necessarily recommend you stopping for the shapely young girls "hitch-hiking" on the roads outside major cities like Varna. It is easy to imagine they are damsels in distress but in fact you'll find them stationed every 600-800 yards in places on lonely roads and by areas of woodland. My Bulgarian friends said it was safest to drive on and said absoluely nothing more. Food is inexpensive but get the advice of friendly locals because there's plenty of people in the Sunny Beach area who will take you for a ride. With taxis get a price beforehand. Or even negotiate with a member of staff at the hotel who might welcome the extra pin money. That's what I did and it worked well. Take advice too when changing money. By the way, don't go breaking the law and acting like a hooligan. I'm not suggesting you would but Bulgarian police stations and prisons are not the places to end up. The police, certainly at the time I was there, are virtually autonomous and a law unto themselves. They are not noted for a sense of humour when dealing with offenders. Overall I loved the place and may go back next month. But it can be a bit austere and a culture shock too in places. Depends where you go.
funkyfox1884 Posted 7 February 2007 Posted 7 February 2007 We went to Sunny Beach about eighteen months ago. We found the people friendly, the food and drink cheap and the beaches clean. There was a little place called the Condor Bar which sold 4 shot cocktails for less than a quid and bottles of Becks for about 35p. The only problem was, to get back to our hotel, we had to cross the main road and bulgarians all seem to be maniac drivers  ...worth it though
Stevosevic Posted 7 February 2007 Author Posted 7 February 2007 thanks for the feedback, much appreciated. especially thracian great piece
