isaidno Posted 15 March 2007 Author Posted 15 March 2007 Ilmor withdrawal stuns McWilliams Veteran Northern Ireland rider Jeremy McWilliams is out of the MotoGP series after his Ilmor team withdrew because of lack of sponsorship. Ilmor boss Mario Illien said they had opted to suspend racing activity but would continue to seek a backer. McWilliams returned to the GP circuit this year but did not compete in the opening race in Qatar after being hurt in a crash during final qualifying. At 42 he was the oldest participant in the MotoGP series. McWilliams had been riding alongside Australian Andrew Pitt for Ilmor. "I am numb at the moment. It seems they are ceasing their racing activities because of lack of budget," said McWilliams. "Everyone knows Ilmor were looking for a big sponsor. We have not had as much time on the race track as we needed for all that to fall into place. "But there are always other opportunities around the corner and I will not let this deter me. "I will be back on a bike somewhere in the near future, you can be sure of that. "But I would like to work with the Ilmor team and help them develop their project with the V4 engine." Nathlcfc7 can now have Alex Hoffman as a replacement rider, he's a spare.
isaidno Posted 23 March 2007 Author Posted 23 March 2007 Roberts Jr. tops opening practice Kenny Roberts Jr. caused a surprise during opening free practice for this weekend's MotoGP race at Jerez when he topped the times with a late run of quick laps. The American, whose team announced two major new sponsorship deals on the eve of the Spanish race, moved to the top of the timesheets with two minutes of the hour-long session remaining - before bettering his performance on his last lap. Roberts Jr.'s best lap of 1:41.182 was 0.236 seconds faster than the next quickest rider, Marco Melandri on the Honda Gresini. The Italian had temporarily been top of the times with his best lap, which came with seven minutes of practice remaining, before Roberts Jr. beat him. MotoGP championship leader Casey Stoner maintained Ducati Marlboro's impressive early season form with the third quickest time, having been at the top of the timesheets for much of the session. The Australian, winner of the season opener in Qatar, had been the first rider to set a fast lap and, although Yamaha's Valentino Rossi and Colin Edwards both temporarily went quickest early on, Stoner reasserted his advantage halfway through the session before Melandri and Roberts Jr. then beat him. World champion Nicky Hayden enjoyed an encouraging morning to set the fourth quickest time, with the American finally appearing to get comfortable on his RC212V bike. Toni Elias was fifth fastest for Honda Gresini, with American John Hopkins sixth quickest overall just ahead of Dani Pedrosa and Rossi. Yamaha's Colin Edwards was ninth. Pos Rider Team Time Laps 1. isaidno Posted 23 March 2007 Author Posted 23 March 2007 Checa fastest in second practice Carlos Checa led a Spanish one-two-three in the second MotoGP practice session at Jerez on Friday. The session was also a good one for Honda, as Checa, Dani Pedrosa and Toni Elias made sure that the Japanese manufacturer occupied the top three places. However, it wasn't a perfect session for Honda, as the next RC212V was down in 12th place with Marco Melandri, while reigning world champion Nicky Hayden continued to struggle with the new bike and finished the session in 13th. Championship leader Casey Stoner was fourth fastest for Ducati, while his teammate and last year's winner at the Spanish track, Loris Capirossi, was only 11th. Valentino Rossi was fifth quickest on his Yamaha, with this morning's pacesetter Kenny Roberts Jr sixth fastest.
