cisono Posted 12 April 2007 Posted 12 April 2007 My car (Vauxhall Cavalier 2.0 sri) has recently started to behave erratically... a) refusing to unlock itself. By this I mean, (as no remote unlocking is available) I turn the key towards unlock, and it bounces back to the locked position. If I time things correctly (opening the door in the fraction of a second when the door is unlocked) I can get in, but it generally takes several lock/unlock toggling motions and it then locks me in anyway. Also, while all this is going on, bystanders typically think I am trying to break into my own car b) Hazards lights trouble. yesterday the hazard lights came on, 5 minutes after I had parked the car, locked it and left it there. Warned by our receptionist, I came back to check the car and found that the hazard light switch was actually OFF. c) Loud Ticking Noise from glove compartment. Today, I managed to get into my car once again (in spite of the locking/unlocking problem) only to find that there was a loud ticking noise coming from the glove compartment. I exited the car immediately, locked it and unlocked it again and found the noise had gone. Any ideas as to causes and recommended course of action (other than scrapping the car right now)?
Turtles Head Posted 12 April 2007 Posted 12 April 2007 My brother had the same problem with his car, with the locks. His was slightly worse in that his alarm would often go off when he eventually did get inside. Ill never forget driving down the A50 with the alarm going . Obviously this is no help to you, but ill ask him what he did to get it sorted tomorrow.

Indeed I do. I had a problem with central locking before (whereby my car would lock when I opened the boot and/or all doors would lock when going round a roundabout or took a left turn ). In that case, it was a wire problem in the boot... which nearly caused a fire! I would not be surprised if you were right with your guess (I did smell something burning the other day too). Will have a look in there later on. Thanks.

That sounds like fun So glad no alarm is involved in the problems I am having
The People's Hero Posted 13 April 2007 Posted 13 April 2007 Knowing little about cars I'd be inclined to scrap.
cisono Posted 13 April 2007 Author Posted 13 April 2007 Knowing little about cars I'd be inclined to scrap. Not an option right now, but it is due for scrapping in about 6 months...

Our cavalier done this the other week, completely drained the battery too! I think a change of fuse would do it.
JadeFalcon Posted 13 April 2007 Posted 13 April 2007 locks can go out of sync after a long time of use(happens on my scort) usually noticed at night after locking car for evening, get back in in the morning and when the door is unlocked it locks itself again, can usually be sorted by cycling the locks again(lock + unlock), its usually a carbon buildup inside the lock, either slight spray of wd40 or a lock rebuild is needed but it does sound like you have an electrical fault aswell, check all the wirings to and from your internal fusebox, plug n check every fuse, especially the legs on the fuses for any signs of corrosion
Wils Posted 13 April 2007 Posted 13 April 2007 My car has been fine today (Touch wood) after nearly blowing up yesterday.
cisono Posted 13 April 2007 Author Posted 13 April 2007 My car has been fine today (Touch wood) after nearly blowing up yesterday. What happened?
Wils Posted 13 April 2007 Posted 13 April 2007 What happened? Breifly explained in the other thread, basically i had a new starter motor fitted and it was faulty and one of the wires was red hot and melted all the wires in the engine. My car still smells of burning. But im ok Cisono dont you worry
Deathside Posted 15 April 2007 Posted 15 April 2007 I guess you got it fixed by now? Anyways central locking systems are often controlled by relays - Relays make loud clicking noises - (especially when faulty) Hazard light switches were quite a commom fault on Cavaliers / Calibras when I worked in a garage (but that's 10+ years ago) Probably more useless information...
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 15 April 2007 Posted 15 April 2007 c) Loud Ticking Noise from glove compartment.
