Status amongst our best?

Recommended Posts

Recently there was a poll sent around asking who we - the city fans - thought our best player ever was? It gave us a list of so many players to choose from, most players were from different generations so everybody had seen at least one if not more of these players gracing one of our stadiums, entertaining us.

With this in mind I started thinking about our currant crop of players. I believe that although we give players a status of 'legend' these days are any of them really legends?

Now I know that a ball hasn't been officially kicked yet and some of these players we haven't even heard of, never mind seen them play, but some of these players (with us last season) deserve credibility because they stand out from the rest, especially Hume, so I'm wondering what do we make of these new signings and who we think would, if ever given the opportunity, be put in a 'legend' status amongst city folklore??

To be honest, last year no one had the quality to be a true LCFC "legend", possibly except for Hume, who I feel could really develop as a great player if he continues to develop the way he does. This year, it remains to be seen, obviously our two young signings have enourmous potential, and could possibly be great players, however its to early to say. Ryan Smith and Richard Stearman looked like they could be great players, Smith suffered form an attitude problem in my opinion and is now playing his trade at Millwall, and Stearman has gone of the rails a bit, but could get his career back on track if he works hard

like you said no one really had the quality to be a true LCFC legend but if but out of the whole team last year i think that kisnorbo and hume could possibly be called an LCFC legend. kisnorbo for the 6/7 goals that he scored for us and he was solid at the back and hume for the 14 goals he scored and the effort that he put in week in week out

You make a very good point, Kisnorbo was a rock at the back, and came forward to get goals, if he continues to develop this season then yes he could also be a "legend"

Kaabi (sp?) could become like Muzzy? Pretty unknown, very talented and as we gave him a chance stay loyal to us.

Old Kaabi will be a cult hero whatever after this build up. Hopefully that will be reciprocated in his performances and he'll end up a true legend

You can't say that before he's even played a game in England, its a very different league compared to what he's used to.

Of course you can say that you hope something will happen - I hoped that Hughes would be a competent midfielder. Didn't happen, but I hoped it would. :P

sorry, but i can't accept hume and kisnorbo as LCFC legends - good players in one of the worst teams ever, means that they stand out, but neither would have made it into the last decent city team (MON) - to become a legend requires both performance AND personality

hume is a nice guy, and may one day achieve legend status, based on his character and popularity, but is not in the same league - legend wise - as chandler, rowley, lineker or cottee.

to be a legend really requires being part of a successful team - take someone like zagorakis - he hardly played due to the quality of the midfield we had, but reached a kind of legend status (tho not a total legend) simply by being part of that team and for his subsequent international success.

back in the 90s every player had a song, now hardly anyone does, the fact that stearman is in the top few appearances suggests that it will take more stability and success for the club before the current crop of players reach legend status (you could argue that legends are fewer these days, cause players are so transient)

who knows - if we have a promotion season - legend status might be realistic soon, but whilst we are where we are none of the current players will be considered as legends, no matter how fondly they may end up being remembered.

Not sure that I agree with that. I think that legend status is achieved through making an impact upon the memories of supporters and I think that can be done either in a strong team or a weak team.
