wallin1704 Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 1st game is vital especially as it is at home against newly promoted opposition (no offence intended to blackpool who i think will have a good season) but more importantly to me is how the fans are on the opening day.. if we all get behind the team and back the boys how we used to we can really make the walkers a fortress like we used to at filbert st! (wanted to use cauldren of hate but we're too nice!) lets be honest we've not had much to cheer about last couple of seasons.. now with renewed optimism and a better squad for this season lets get behind the boys and get back to where we rightfully belong, the top tier!
The Stig Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 It could have been posted before blah blah blah - if so, I'm very arsing sorry. To save everyone the trouble and torture of following City through 46 games again, I reckon we can guess the outcome from the opening match.... Here's the evidence, starting from The Days Of Saint Brian... 91-92 Swindon 0-0 City Good away point, play-offs. 92-93 City 2-1 Luton Home win, play offs. 93-94 City 2-1 Peterborough Home win, play-offs again and promoted. 94-95 City 1-3 Newcastle Outclassed on the days, and relegated by miles. 95-96 Sunderland 1-2 City Away win, play-offs and promotion. 96-97 Sunderland 0-0 City Good away Premiership point, steady season, and a trophy. 97-98 City 1-0 Villa Home win, another good season. 98-99 Man Utd 2-2 City Away point at Old Trafford, another good season. 99-00 Arsenal 2-1 City Ok - a defeat, but we played well at Highbury, another good season and another trophy. 00-01 City 0-0 Villa Just a home point, things beginning to take a down-turn under Taylor. 01-02 City 0-5 Bolton Dreadful defeat, dreadful relegation season. 02-03 City 2-0 Watford Home win, promoted. 03-04 City 2-2 Southampton Only a point at home pissing away a 2-goal lead, relegated. 04-05 City 0-0 West Ham Dour home point, dour season. 05-06 Sheff Utd 4-1 City Shocker, shocker. 06-07 Luton 2-0 City Shocker, shocker. 07-08 City ?-? Blackpool ... There you have it. Wait until the Blackpool game has finished, and then plan your season accordingly. You're absolutely right, I spotted this last season as well, when we lost to Luton I looked back at our recent first games and they all seem to sum up our season. The 2-2 draw with Southampton summed up our season, giving away leads and not picking up points. I am a really think that if we win our first game this season will be a good one.
Fez of Mahrez Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 Really interesting. Although obviously there are teams that have good starts and fade or start badly and improve, Luton last season showed explicitly that we were abysmal and were not going to show the same sort of form that Kelly got out of the team when he first took on the job. Although it may take time for Allen and some of the new players to acclimatise to this division, I think it would/will be reassuring for the fans to see better quality players because I can't imagine the likes of N'Gotty, Clemence and Kishishev looking as nervous in possession as some of our players did last season.

N'Gotty and Kishishev wouldn't look nervous in front of a firing squad judging by their first outings. They looked exactly what we've needed for long time - real class. What's more they are the sort of players who will make the game easier for all around them by doing the simple things accurately and quickly. When people talk about experience and the need for such people to help bring young players through, N'Gotty and Kishishev looked the perfect people. Indeed N'Gotty's the first centre-bck I've seen at City to remind me of Ian King because of the way, when he won the ball, he hardly ever gave it away.

Hopefully they can take care of business and allow the younger players to adapt to first-team football without having to take on all the responsibility that the senior pros shirked last season.
Pete_foxes Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 hmm.. I doubt we can really tell of one game how our season will pan out. I remember when we got promoted, when we won the first two, then got thumped 6-1 by Ipswitch in I think the third game of the season. Alarm bells might start ring slightly if we lose to Blackpool. I would hope we could win that game. I think our second half of the season will be better than the first half, largly because there is a possibility we could have about 7/8 new players starting the season having not played a competitive match together & they need time to get used to eachother. But we'l see. Bring on Blackpool!

Couldn't agree more. And I think the first signs of it were seen on Saturday. Weso, Stearman, James Chambers and Mattock looked completely at home cos they could make runs safe in the knowledge they'd get a simple pass to feet - and quickly. And if they couldn't take play forward there was N'Gotty and Kishishev forever there to accept the get-out ball.
dandannieldanok Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 I think winning this season's first game is more vital than it has been for a few season's now. All the pressure is on us having spent and acquired 11 players (so far) with a totally new set-up behind the scenes as well. Couple that with a potential 30,000 gate at the Walkers, a good start is absolutely vital for moral. Our opponents shouldn't be taken lightly but they have only just been promoted and have hardly splashed out in the transfer market either.
Brainy Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 Where will Blackpool be playing their football next season? The last three seasons, the team we've played first has gone on to be promoted/relegated.

Interesting find Walkers... I find myself thinking Blackpool will have a great season, but not a play off position, nor relegation battle. Comfy mid table finish for Blackpool. Leicester 6th in the table, beating southampton after two legs 1-0 on aggeregate (sagonowski O.g ) Then beating Sheff Utd in the play off final 3-1 I wish
SystonFox Posted 17 July 2007 Posted 17 July 2007 cheers nath im off down the bookies now with that summary!

Thats some weird stuff about our club but what the stats do seem to prove is that confidence is key and starting well can easily get a side on the front foot whilst negative results could leave players with questions about there form and ability. Some have already mentioned other clubs like Cardiff and Sunderland and they too are perfect examples about confidence. One minute Cardiff are winning the league and cant lose and then they go on a stinker of a run and Sunderland had the flip-side of that by starting pants under Quinn before Keano came in and started the miracle run. Lets just hope we get the run of the ball and or lads start well so we can set the season up.
