Nationwider Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 It could have been posted before blah blah blah - if so, I'm very arsing sorry. To save everyone the trouble and torture of following City through 46 games again, I reckon we can guess the outcome from the opening match.... Here's the evidence, starting from The Days Of Saint Brian... 91-92 Swindon 0-0 City Good away point, play-offs. 92-93 City 2-1 Luton Home win, play offs. 93-94 City 2-1 Peterborough Home win, play-offs again and promoted. 94-95 City 1-3 Newcastle Outclassed on the days, and relegated by miles. 95-96 Sunderland 1-2 City Away win, play-offs and promotion. 96-97 Sunderland 0-0 City Good away Premiership point, steady season, and a trophy. 97-98 City 1-0 Villa Home win, another good season. 98-99 Man Utd 2-2 City Away point at Old Trafford, another good season. 99-00 Arsenal 2-1 City Ok - a defeat, but we played well at Highbury, another good season and another trophy. 00-01 City 0-0 Villa Just a home point, things beginning to take a down-turn under Taylor. 01-02 City 0-5 Bolton Dreadful defeat, dreadful relegation season. 02-03 City 2-0 Watford Home win, promoted. 03-04 City 2-2 Southampton Only a point at home pissing away a 2-goal lead, relegated. 04-05 City 0-0 West Ham Dour home point, dour season. 05-06 Sheff Utd 4-1 City Shocker, shocker. 06-07 Luton 2-0 City Shocker, shocker. 07-08 City ?-? Blackpool ... There you have it. Wait until the Blackpool game has finished, and then plan your season accordingly.

JoeyB Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 When nationwider starts a topic! You can tell it will be good! Like ld3 said a good start will be important!
Jimmy Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 yeah cus sunderland had an awesome start last season dint they ...
JoeyB Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 yeah cus sunderland had an awesome start last season dint they ... sunderland last year did not start too well He's on about Leicester not sunderland
Jimmy Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 he is making the point that a good start is vital, therefore we made the counter point that sunderland had an awful start yet won the league...
Nationwider Posted 15 July 2007 Author Posted 15 July 2007 I think it's more of a coincidence really.
Mr Happy Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 Well looking at our last couple of starts to a season, surely it can't get any worse?? ...at that note i'll keep tight lipped about relegation
He's not bald Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 I think it's more of a coincidence really. Who bloody care's?..we will do ok..we ain't gonna get relegated...doubt we'll get promoted...decent and passionate footie will be a start!
Nationwider Posted 15 July 2007 Author Posted 15 July 2007 Who bloody care's?..we will do ok..we ain't gonna get relegated...doubt we'll get promoted...decent and passionate footie will be a start! On the basis that only a quarter of the teams in the league will be either promoted or relegated, that's a fairly low-risk prediction. My method is better.
Mr Happy Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 Alot of the times we started the season with a draw we have either, according to that chart, had a good season in the premiership or a poor season in the championship/division1 so please don't tell me we're going to pick up one point from the Blackpool game and have a cr*p season again!!
Wasyls Pec Deck Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 teams that win promotion have to start and carry on a momentum, usually from the first game. Altho Sunderland did anything but that last season...
Brainy Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 Sunderland may have lost their first four games, but I cant imagine Leicester doing that and then winning 30 of the next 42 games.
SystonFox Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 Cardiff had an amazing start and then finished 11th.... i think a win VS Blackpool is vital obviously and i would love to see it. a home game on the first day hasnt happened for the previous 2 seasons and the 2 previous home first dayers were against decent opposition and we didn't win. i think we need to take this oppurtunity and storm the first game. anything after that u cannot tell really.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 First games probably affect the first few games of the season but I don't think they are all that important.
Chrysalis Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 I agree and have said it again and again to my friends, the first game is vital and generally after 10 games you have an idea how the season will pan out. Sunderlands season was a freak event. Reading lost their first game also in their promotion year but more often then not especially in our case the first game is an indicator.
lookwhaticando Posted 15 July 2007 Posted 15 July 2007 Crying out loud people. Who bashed your heads together today? Nationwider was - quite explicitly - considering our recent history with regards to first games of the season and our situation at the end of said season. Forget what Sunderland did, or what Cardiff did... it's got nowt to do with them. Oh, and another thing, let's not take this all a little too seriously. I don't think Nationwider is really suggesting that our first game will make or break our season. This lack of footballing action has really fúcked with some of your brains, methinks.

city1993 Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 BINGO, there we have it then.... Lets not lose to them now though, because then this topic will be brought up in every other conversation over the season if we lose saying it's fate and all that crap.

Thracian Posted 16 July 2007 Posted 16 July 2007 Nationwider's brought out a good point, the evidence for which is compelling, whether it be coincidence or not. Such history can affect a team psychologically - like our rarely winning at Ipswich or QPR. And if you start poorly, pressure and uncertainty can quickly start to affect morale. Get the right result on the opening day and there's the feeling that you're way ahead of where you'd normally be and confidence/self-belief starts to grow. Sadly, good team or bad, I don't see any way of guaranteeing success in our first game but what a manager can do something about is our approach. Kelly showed his colours for the season in the first match last season. He didn't choose the team on merit, not everyone was properly fit and he never set out to attack the game and impose our will. I just cannot imagine that with Martin Allen. Whether he'll have the courage to chose on merit or whether people like Clemence have come with their place guaranteed I don't know. But: a) I think the team will be fit. b) I think we'll be positive, try to score some goals and will attempt to win the match rather than simply pinch it. Yes, he could still be suckered cos I'm not sure he's a tactical genius and it may take longer than he'd like to find his best team and to get so many new signings to blend together and show their best form. But Allen's team will have attitude. And so long as he doesn't let caution or fear start to compromise that attitude I have every confidence in the bloke. For all that I think the first game this season will end in a draw. Not because of any shortcomings of MA or our team. But because Leicester will be up against a clever and competent opponent who won't fall short with his own preparations. Intriguing game.
