davieG Posted 18 February 2005 Posted 18 February 2005 Ex-Fox Royce is in the hunt Feb 18 2005 By Raj Johal, South London Press THE ban on hunting became law this Friday, but Simon Royce hopes his Charlton team-mates can corner a few Foxes on Saturday. Royce, on loan at QPR but with a free weekend, will be an interested spectator as his former club Leicester come to The Valley bidding to upset the Addicks. The keeper reckons Alan Curbishley's men will come out on top - if they can keep their cool. "Only the likes of Jordan Stewart and Ian Walker are there from my time," said Royce. "But their style of play hasn't changed much and I think Leicester will come to ruffle a few feathers. "They've always been a pretty physical side and I think the key to the game will be if Charlton keep their heads, and then let their passing come to the fore. If they do, their Premiership class should tell. "On paper, you'd expect a Charlton win but this is the cup and Leicester always have a decent team spirit. It will certainly be a tougher proposition than the games against Rochdale and Yeovil - but having got past two banana skins, they should be able to avoid slipping up on Saturday." Royce moved to Leicester from Charlton in 2000 on a free, but returned to The Valley in the summer of 2003 after a bust-up with then-boss Micky Adams. Naturally, he'll be in the Addicks' corner on Saturday but he thinks the game could have bigger ramifications for Curbishley's men. "For Curbs, this is a chance to bring some silverware to the club and they have a great chance to do it this season if they can beat Leicester and get another good draw," he said. "But a win will also give the side great confidence for the two games against Spurs and Middlesbrough in the Premiership, and that could massively affect their bid to get into Europe. "Getting into Europe would be like winning a cup for Charlton. And for Curbs it'd be another string to his bow as a manager. "It must be Curbs' ambition to win something with Charlton now to try and take this club to the next step in its progression. But even a cup run to the semis or final would be great for the fans and would add momentum to Charlton's bid to get a bit more recognition as a club." Talking about recognition, Royce's own situation isn't too great right now. He was on the bench for almost every Premier-ship game last season - and started the first with Dean Kiely suspended - but has fallen behind Stephan Andersen as the club's number two. A loan spell to QPR was something he jumped at - and, ironically, there was even interest from Leicester while Walker was out injured recently. But with his contract up in the summer things are very much up in the air for the keeper. "Charlton are having another great season which I'm happy about but you can't really feel a part of it if you're not getting a look in," admitted Royce. "I've spoken to Curbs and he told me that he doesn't want me to leave and that there's another year for me if I want it in the summer. "But you do get a bit fed up not playing so I'll have to weigh up all of my options at the end of the season. Do I just pick up my wages or do I make a break and try get regular first-team football elsewhere. It's a bit up in the air but I'm veering towards looking for regular football, if I'm honest. "I was involved at lot last season but haven't been this season although I've done the same things - it is tough to get your head around sometimes. "Stephan Andersen's come from playing regular football to being a back-up to Deano - maybe he'll get frustrated with things soon as well. "But we'll have to wait and see what happens. Things can change very quickly. Right now I'm enjoying it at QPR and hoping maybe to get a third month here if things go well. "But, I'm free this weekend because there's no game so I'll probably get down to The Valley to watch the cup game. It should be a good match, and exciting. But my money's on Charlton. And why can't they go all the way? It's be great reward for the fans and for Curbs as well."
Anish Posted 18 February 2005 Posted 18 February 2005 It would have been 'nice' if they had revealed more details of the alleged bust-up!
Scow Posted 18 February 2005 Posted 18 February 2005 Not exactly surprising, is it? He's on the way to achieveing the same feat with his whole Cov squad by declaring they're pretty much all shite...
Stuliasz Posted 19 February 2005 Posted 19 February 2005 I'm sure we can do it if we put our backs into it!
Chandler Posted 19 February 2005 Posted 19 February 2005 Classic case of bonehead humbug. Royce made Pressman look like Buffon. We all thought that he was crap. So well played Micky for getting shot of him. In the interest of moronic bias of course (ie your bias) Royce's most telling observation was missed: that our style of play hadn't changed much. Hoof is still on the menu children. But if imagining otherwise helps you cope with mid table obscurity - keep dropping the tabs.

Or did you mean Baboon? Royce was a better keeper than Pressman...not by much, but he was!
step Posted 19 February 2005 Posted 19 February 2005 For once I agree with Chandler. but you need to look at which player does most of the hoofing, Its walker. who at every opertunity drop kicks the ball as far as possible up the pitch which ineverably becomes a 50:50 ball. A crap tactic which more often than gives the ball away. Though I dont rate pressman as a goaly he did throw the ball out, which allowed or attacks to be built from the back and improved the quality of our game. Though walker is a great shoot stopper, he dose not come of his line enough to catch crosses and corners and he still makes silly mistakes Personally I aint convinced walker is what we need but I cant see us getting anyone better and hoofing the ball is the price we have to pay for him being in goal. Hoof ball will stay until walker goes

Who ate all the pies? Posted 19 February 2005 Posted 19 February 2005 I think you'll find pressman threw it out because if he tried to kick it he would destabalise and fall over. I still say likening Pressman to Bufon is ridiculous. Royce was a better keeper so he booted it out at least the amount of errors was a hell of a lot less!

IMO you don't have to fall out with players even if you think they aren't up to the job, you quietly and politely move them on. As for this hoofing reputation I believe it's now over stated we are hoofing it a lot less now than we were against the likes of Brighton and Watford and having watched the Ipswich / Preston game last night we are currently no worse than Ipswich. Unfortunately once you get a reputation it sticks, like we had with MON when we closed teams down and were accused of not 'playing the game' yet teams like Man U close the oppo down as much as anybody. As for Walker I'm inclined to agree with you, but this may be a lack of confidence in the two centre backs whom he hardly ever passes to, I think his main fault is he doesn't command his area with any great conviction.
MON Posted 19 February 2005 Posted 19 February 2005 Royce wasn't a bad keeper for us i can remember. He did well against aresenal when Matt Jones' got sent off but we held out for a 0-0 draw. Royce was definitley better then Pressman. But the reason micky wanted him out was because we already had flowers here and Royce, Walker and Flowers were all on Taylor contracts. We could only keep one of them for next season, and Royce and Flowers were out of contract.
