MPH Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 apart from the blue jays... and when did a non-british person last win the snooker world champs? actually, i think it was this year... didnt some guy from thailand win it? either way, people from all over the world are allowed to enter it, with the world Series, its only between american states.... Ok just had a look and correction, it was someone from Hong Kong. and it was the Royal London Watches grand prix. Hong Kong's Marco Fu stunned former world champion Ronnie O'Sullivan by beating him 9-6 in the final of the Royal London Watches Grand Prix.
Hullfox Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 Take the piss all you like but some of the posters on here would make him look like Einstein.
MPH Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 if i remember rightly, and i'll happily be corrected, the americans consider anything from the americas as world anything else is global. i actually talked about this briefly with an american friend. His argument as to why it should be called the world series was " Well, we have some south americans playing in the competition" Meaning not all the competitors in the american state teams were originally from the states. We were talking specifically about the baseball world series at the time.
macky Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 what do you expect when in baseball the World Series only involves American team. Some Americans think they are the world. But that's because the tournament was originally sponsored by the New York World newspaper & the name stuck.
Guest Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 Besides which, no other nation wants to play what is, in effect, glorified rounders.
Head Honcho Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 In the not too distant future English will not be the first language for the majority of people in the capitol More than half the kids in Inner London schools come from an ethnic background-you do the maths!
DanTheFoxBhoy Posted 28 October 2007 Posted 28 October 2007 If you want to know how stupid some Americans are when it comes to recognising world landmarks, check this out:
Lillehamring Posted 29 October 2007 Posted 29 October 2007 Comparing the American world series to the Snooker World Championship is a bit silly really isn't it. Seeing as comeptitors from at least 8 different countries have participated in the past. Any one good enough can play, it's just that the British are the best at it. Where as ther World Series is completley different. of course, it is silly, but so is dragging out the fact that it's called the world series... interesting to discover it's sponsorship origins tho... interestingly, the superbowl champions are deemed 'world champions' also... granted the snooker is an open competiotion but it's not exactly a world free for all. As someone here said, no one outside of north america would be able to compete at the required level in the 'world series' so they can quite rightly consider themselves to be champions of world, which they probably do. mind you, thinking about this guys ignorance, it really pisses me off when british people liken american football and rugby - even the ball is a different shape - and i have no doubt (teachers amongst us, some confirmation please) that a good percentage of school kids in england (and adults too, i guess) would also fail to place london on a map...
Fez of Mahrez Posted 29 October 2007 Posted 29 October 2007 what do you expect when in baseball the World Series only involves American team. Some Americans think they are the world. Someone has already made the point I originally posted here.
Smiffy Posted 29 October 2007 Posted 29 October 2007 You would be amazed by the lack of geographic knowledge taught in the States. I moved here when I was 15 and there were a lot of kids that seemed to be amazed that I spoke English. Most adults couldn't tell you the difference between GB, UK and England. And as far as baseball is concerned, it is actually becoming a lot like the Premiership. Cubans and Asians hold a big presence. But footballers are certainly not hired for their brainpower. They all go to college to play football and they are basically given the grades to ensure that they are able to play. Its a joke!
