MPH Posted 18 November 2007 Posted 18 November 2007 I'd personally dispute Lampard's credentials as 'world class'. I think he consistently underachieves for his country, he's playing football competitively in a top-four club and really getting a chance to shine and I think we see his best at Chelsea. But it's made easy by the multi-bzllion pound superstars around him. England, though they have a good squad, don't have that immense degree of talent and Lampard, when he plays, is expected to carry the team. I watch most of your internationals and I can't say I can remember him ever pulling that off.I'd like to reiterate again that I'm genuinely not claiming Koumas is world class or indeed the out and out best midfielder in Britain but that he is, on his day capable of absolute, undeniable, match-running class that I really don't think enough people give him due credit for. And, aye, he hasn't always been this good - Tranmere are no Liverpool and he didn't set the world alight at WBA, either. But I think he's really developed later in his career and in the right frame of mind his vision and touch are just brilliant. If I were a manager to pick a real squad I'd almost certainly have Lampard and not Koumas because he's a million times more consistent, experienced and hard working. Hence his value, his current club and his countless medals. But if I were to piece together a hypothetical dream team? I'd have the Koumas that turned up today over Lampard any day. Takes a much better free kick, too. there isnt a doubt in my mind that Koumas is more effective for his country than Lampard is for england. Lampard and Gerrard just dont work well together at international level.. never have done. But i dont think that makes him the better player... the top clubs, Barca, Real, AC milan ( as well as others) have all shown an intrest in Lampard but i dont think a single one of them has in Koumas.... If Koumas is even as good as Lampard he would be playing for a better club... and i dont mean for someone like Everton but a top 4 club.. On his day, im sure Koumas is an amazing player.. for me, it beggars belief that Wales havnt gotten futher in international competitions with some of their players they have had... But its over the course of a season a player has to be judged to show their true class, i guess...
