Craig on C5's Football Night

Insomniacs like me might be familiar with this all talk and no action show. Well our (er that's your) Craig was on in the wee hours of Friday. He said some interesting things (nothing to change my view of him though, in fact quite the reverse).

His most interesting statement was an answer to a rather challenging question:" how do you explain LCFC's excellent cup form as compared to their poor league form?"

Paraphrased his reply ran some thing like this: "the players KNOW when there is a big game coming up. It's kind of obvious in training." The more observant amongst you will realise his answer begs two very important questions. Below, for the less observant (ie most of you) are those queries.

1) It appears (as I have suspected all along) that motivation at LCFC is very much a personal matter (ie the manager has little to do with it).

2) Why do the players regard cup games as big? By implication then, Championship games are not big. This suggests that the players are complacent.

This should be a matter of some concern to Leicester fans.

Pity CL didn't detect the lack of "big match camaraderie" before Rotherham etc then? There seemed to be an air of "Let's just get this one out the way first" about the Burnley match too, in terms of the build-up, and with one or two team selections. I'd didn't go, so I can't comment on the attitude of the players on the night.

The cup run's exciting, but I'd happliy lose on Sun, if it meant 6 points against Watford and West Ham. We could be really staring down the barrel on Saturday night, and the thought of NOT getting another 4 wins before the end of the league season is too awful to contemplate.

Cup run = £Â£Ã‚£s, though. I was talking to a Liverpool fan at work today. Liverpool have the similar problem (of sorts) at the moment - a cup team and a league team. The top (foreign) players fancy the cups, but not the humdrum stuff. A top club can finish 4th in the Prem and then take £25M from the Champions League....why bother with the league when you can get cheap thrills and £Â£Ã‚£s against Bayer Leverkeusen?

Not QUITE City's problem - but please, CL, make sure that the team goes out on to the pitch on Tuesday with the same attitude as the cup game. Or we could have a problem.

when you used to go to school (or still do) any normal day is treated the same and you probably cant be bothered to drag your arse out of bed, but if your going on a school trip to alton towers then your the first little bastard at the school gates waiting, same as work and i imagine the same for footy players,

"mmmm "burnley away on a cold tuesday night....bollox, oh look premiership team on the tellychance of a big win bonus, etc, etc.

its life, the players are not stupid they know relistically we cannot achieve anything in the league, and so do the fans (not you though chandler because your an "every game" hardcore blue lcfc warrior) by taking 7-8000 to blackburn and only a few hundred to burnley.

i personally believe craig is doing a good job, we play far better football, he is signing a lot of young talent and hopefully next season we can push for a promotion place i believe it will take two seasons for the team to gel and perform cosistantly and dont mind waiting ive been going 15 years another two or three years to see a good team again aint gonna bother me and while we can enjoy occasions like tomorrow the better.

up the city!!!!!

An extremely good point. This says to me that the fans are behaving in the same way as the players if you believe Chandler's post.:thumbup:;)

Yes, but we still have a lot to lose!

I think he's doing a decent job too. Clearing some of the driftwood from the squad was an important step, and I'm largely positive about how we'll line up next season... as long as we're still in the Championship. I'm not trying to be negative and YES, tomorrow is a massive day for the club. I just hope they treat Watford and the following 10 games with the same passion.

Chandler, I saw Levein on the that show too. One reason why the players get up for cup games and not Championship is because a lot of them still think they're premier players. Dublin, Dabizas and Keown when he was here are examples of these types of player. When Micky signed these players, he said that their experience mixed with the youth would win us promotion but the problem is that these player had either never played lower than the Premiership or hadn't been out of the Premiership for ages. It's a totally different division. An experienced Premiership player could still struggle in the Championship due to motivation. You may have noticed that the majority of Levein's signings are young lads who just want to play football like McCarthy. These lads don't care if it's Championship or FA Cup, they just want to play.

Dumb and dumber...MadLevein's fatalism (it's just like school) V Jonbluefox's defeatism (Premiership primadonnas won't play in the Championship). Interestingly, you both concede that there is a motivation crisis. This of course is in stark contrast to what you and others were saying a few weeks back.

All you can offer are feeble excuses. In my day, if you didn't perform at school you got thrashed within an inch of your life, MadLevein. As for your absurd dictum JBF, let me remind you that a certain ex manager of ours had few problems motivating a load of Premiership has beens into winning promotion.

So you've both finally admitted that CL can't motivate by saying that it's either a fact of life or that it can't be done. If that is the case, it looks like we're odds on for the drop then boys. No point in Craig hanging around is there (even if we go through to the semi's tomorrow)?

Let's see what Steve Walsh would do to gee up our Premiership primadonnas

eh?

Chandler, as usall you take soimeones comment out of context to suit you obesesive argument. We all conceed that the players get better motivated for a big match. But that does not mean they are not motivated for a normal everyday match.

The most important fact, that you choose to ignore is that the players are a lot more motivated by CL than they ever where under MA.

Micky Adams had few problems because those Premiership has beens knew that they had to win promotion to get their deferred wages back. That's an incentive for any professional don't you think?

...so the lower down the table you go (P19 now Step) the more motivated you are then? Or is it the length of a winless streak (5 now step)? Or minutes without a goal?

Funny, that. And there was I labouring under a massive misapprehension that motivated teams tended to win games. You learn something new every day (especially it seems if you support LCFC!)

You might be right JBF, the deferred wages probably did help to spur the players on a little.

Guess who sold them that little idea ( in the face of considerable opposition from the PFA)?

So you would rather we were managed by a guy with no managerial experience (but a long City connection) than one who has re-built a club to give it relative success in comparison to previous years with little money available.

Suggest you go to support West Brom then, they select managers based on the 'they used to be a great player for us principal' rather than taking into account his 27% win ratio in his previous job, of course Walshie has a 0% win ratio given his hasn't managed anybody!

Great managers, like all leaders are born, not made. Walsh exudes natural authority. Levein does not.

'Experienced' managers are appointed to cover chairman's backsides in case things go wrong - not because their record stands up to scrutiny. That was why Peter Taylor was appointed ahead of Walsh - see where it got us.

Only a tiny fraction of managers actually have a beneficial effect on their teams' fortunes. The vast majority, even with big budgets, make little significant difference. And all of this vast majority are the 'experienced type' jumping from horse to horse on the managerial merry-go-round.

And it wouldn't be so bad if Levein hadn't made a significant difference. We would still be in 11th place; two wins off a play off slot. Not 19th and two defeats away from the drop zone.

No, I'm better than him (he said modestly). My sentiments entirely though.

And, shock! horror! they were once YOUR sentiments too (er I don't necessarily mean you, personally, Cobbo)!! But of course you've either forgotten that fact or are in denial about it. That's why irritating bastards like me come on to sites like this to remind you.

Think of me as the clear, serene mind you once had - before you started cacking it out at the Watford game...
