Ric Flair Posted 15 March 2005 Posted 15 March 2005 I know I am not one to talk as I regularly give players stick if they aren't performing, but don't you think De Vries deserves a chance? You were all quick to praise him as a demi-god in his cameo roles against Reading and Crewe and just because he's put in a few lacklustre displays he's getting villified. To compare him with Akinbiyi is shocking, fair enough he might turn out to be as bad as Ade but I think the big man deserves a chance. His goals scoring record at Hearts was very good, he's scored regular goals against Celtic, Rangers and in the Uefa Cup against Braga and Basle. I know that means **** all, just look at Connolly but we can't tar everyone with the same brush. I really want De Vries to do well, I like the look of him. His bad points are that he looks abit clumsy and he isn't that good at heading ala Scowy and Dublin, but on the flipside of that he has a very good first touch and I think he gives defenders all sorts of problems. This is coming from displays that haven't been to De Vries previous standards and if he finds his form i'll guarantee he'll do well. The fact that he hasn't actually had many chances on goal, means we can't really judge whether he's a good finisher but I think once he scores one and gets a good understanding with his striking partner and the midfield he will score regularly for us. The team need to play to his strengths, he needs another striker alongside him and he needs the midfield supplying him with quality passes. This isn't a rant to get at the fans that are booing him, you can do what you want but I know some of you were quick to praise him and even quicker to slate him, it makes you look silly. Give him a chance and then your opinions will hold more substance. If he turns out to be extremely crap then fair enough, but I think getting on at a player so soon after joining can't have a good effect on them. Encouragement might actually get De Vries scoring and who'd grumble at that if it happened? Super, Super Mark Super, Super Mark Super, Super Mark Super Mark De Freezy Get behind him (support wise!!!)
Fox in a Box Posted 15 March 2005 Posted 15 March 2005 Well said I think intelligent posts make for a better forum, what does everyone else think. 'Get behind them (support wise!!!)' OH MY GOD has the forum got a catch phrase for the run in 'Get behind them (support wise!!!)'
Jonesy_rules Posted 15 March 2005 Posted 15 March 2005 an interesting post Hoof, yet, De Vries doens't seem to have a full heart (in terms of wanting to play for us), hwoever he does seem to do better when he's a lone striker! I'm giving him a chance, yet we can't give him to long! Lets just hope Moore is a quick fix to our scoring problems! we need goals and we need them fast!
Ricey Posted 15 March 2005 Posted 15 March 2005 Great post Hoof. It's pathetic how quickly people have slated De Vries, ok he has ben poor so far but give the guy a ****ing a chance at least.
Scow Posted 15 March 2005 Posted 15 March 2005 As I said in another thread, we need to afford him some patience. I understand why the fans are getting frustrated though. We're not scoring goals, and de Vries doesn't look like getting them at the moment. He has shown some touches of class with his first touch and quick feet, but he looks unconvincing in front of goal. We need to give him a chance, but we need to change something upfront...
Anish Posted 15 March 2005 Posted 15 March 2005 I think part of the reason people are getting on De Vries's back (myself included) is because he is simply not showing any real effort, determination, and (as much as this may sound like a cliche) any sort of willingness to 'die for the cause'. He looks like he can't be arsed to chase and harry defenders like Connolly does, and more worryingly, he doesn't even bother to jump for headers 70%+ of the time. If he jumped and was beaten by a stronger/bigger defenders then I wouldn't grumble so much - but the fact that he can't even jump makes me furious. Look at his size - he dwarfs everyone around him, and yet he is beaten in the air so many times. In my opinion there is no defending that at all. Fair enough he deserves a chance - you liken him to Connolly in the lack of goals department - but at least Connolly works his socks off for the team and the fans can see that at least he tries. With De Vries is doesn't look like he's trying, and that's what has made many fans turn on him so soon.
geogth Posted 16 March 2005 Posted 16 March 2005 i said a few weeks back how devries does not give enough to merit a place in a TEAM he is a good finisher but doesnt put enough into getting in the right position often enough. wait til he starts moaning at everybody around him for not giving him the ball he wants.
step Posted 16 March 2005 Posted 16 March 2005 The first two games when he came on as a sub, he looked a strong, quick players with an excelent first touch. but i have to conceed that I feel very disapointed in him performances since. He does not give 100%, infact I think he puts in about 50% effort which aint good enough. He plays for fouls and not for the ball, falling over all the time. like some bloody jessy. Most oposition managers must love playing against him cos he holds on to the defenders so much they aint got a choice but to mark him. MDv wont let them get away from him. He needs to concentraite on playing football. fcuk holding on to players and fcuk falling over he is about 16 stone and big enough to bulldozz his way past or through most defenders without noticing they are there, so why dont he do it. As for this pretending to jump for the headers. what is that all about? Who is he trying to con. He is 6' 4", and gets out jumped by some 5'6" midget. Twat. But what realy pizzes me off about him is that he has skills, his first touch is shite hot and his anticipation of other players is excelent and he has the hight and strength to be a shite hot forward. MDV if you read this. STOP TAKING THE PIZZ AND DO SOMETHING
