Simi Posted 6 June 2008 Posted 6 June 2008 Mmh. Bigger is better though when you're talking about trying to break the top four of English football. It's a sad reality that you need money, and a lot of it, to do that. I like Sparky and I quite like Blackburn but I think he's taken them as far as he realistically can.Manchester City, if this bloke really has the dollar dollar he claims to, are a much, much bigger prospect and I can fully understand the decision to move. The only concern would be job security, really. That about sums it up I'd say. Even if Hughes does get the boot in time, he's built himself a big enough repuation to maintain another top level job, that's for sure. Even if he doesn't find one straight away, his pay off won't be too bad I'd imagine. So he's all set. I hope it works out for him there, he's a decent bloke. But I think Man City are a new brand of club, along side Newcastle who's expectations are just not realistic enough in the current climate. Regardless of all the money, it takes years to establish yourself in the top four now. Spurs thought they'd cracked it, look what happened to them this year! The Premiership is becoming less interesting by the season in my opinion. One in seven people agree, as they won't be renewing their season tickets. Mainly because of increasted prices, but the price you're paying for what you'll get does not match.
Father Ted Posted 7 June 2008 Posted 7 June 2008 I was speaking to two mates the other day and we were discussing this and we all came to the conclusion that Mark Hughes may have made a big mistake! And apparently rumours are that when Thaksin had his 'final' meeting with Sven, asking him why he should keep his job, Thaksin said 'How far away are we from winning the Premiership and the Champions League?' and Sven said '5 miles!'
TrickyTrev Posted 7 June 2008 Posted 7 June 2008 Don't see how he could have taken Blackburn any further, and if he wants the Utd job at some point he is going to have to get some trophies under his belt and decent European experience. Man City gives him a better opportunity of doing that. Money to spend on an already good side, best youth system in the country guarenteed big gates. e.t.c I respect him for taking on a pressurised but potentially fruitful job. The front 3 of Gamst, Santa Cruz and Bentley that he put together was a stroke of absaloute genius. All 3 absaloute steals, think Santa Cruz was the most expensive at 2.5 mil! Now 3 of the most wanted players outside of the big 4. Chris Samba and Ryan Nelson cost next to nothing between them as well, both brick walls. He's shown a bit of talent as a manager then, should be interesting to see what a British manager can do with a bit of money to spend.
Les-TA-Jon Posted 7 June 2008 Posted 7 June 2008 McClaren - If I were a chairman at any club I'd be embarrased revealing him at a press conference. Mark Hughes at Man City? Yh he'll do alright especially with all the cash of the "Thai Guy" However the expectations (as with Sven) will be huge! Hughes himself will know this of course and he'll be thinking: "Hmm a season at Man City? Of course. I get loads of pocket money to spend in the summer on all my favourites. I'll have a fun crack at the big four. And by the end of the season I will either be sacked and walk away with a huge pay-off or I will get another go and even more pocket money. Plus I might even be able to stare in wonderment at Ronaldinho's teeth IN PERSON!!!"

Les-TA-Jon Posted 8 June 2008 Posted 8 June 2008 "Why exactly?" Well remember the England National Team? You know the ones with John what's his name? and Rio F...something. Steven G. Frank lampsy or something. I can't remember them, but yh you know that good team that played crap and failed to qualify and aren't playing over the summer. Well, and I'm not sure on this, but I think this McClaren guy was the manager at the time. "A good manager would qualify with this squad" - Steve McClaren Look don't get me wrong. He is an ok manager, but what with the fact that he is still mostly hated and ridiculed by the football world as a chairman I would feel a bit embarassed revealing him as the manager so soon after the massive failure of not qualifying.
