genuine reason for optimism.....

It's very hard to gauge how a season might pan out based on a few pre season friendlies and a handfull of new signings (not to mention yet another new manager) but i for one am genuinely excited about the forthcoming season.

We are one of the favourites for promotion and rightly so but we all know from previous bitter experience that things don't always go as we might expect or hope.

I think the best thing about the forthcoming season is that we are at a level where we can experiment a bit, particularly with the youngsters. We have some very promising young players who i hope will shine this season (i'm not an alter ego of Thracian by the way!) Gradel looks like he could be an amazing player and as much as i like the look of Dyer and particularly Adams, i hope Gradel gets a starting berth from the off. Porter is another one who deserves a run in the team and has huge potential. Hopefully the likes of King and Sappleton may get their chance too.

I think what i'm trying to say is that its refreshing not to have a aquad full of ageing mercenaries who are past their peak and just looking to pick up their paycheck at the end of the day. Yes, we still have some (without naming names!) but we have a squad full of hunger and desire.

I'm really hoping the likes of Fryatt finally begin to realise their potential. His goal against Birmingham was top drawer and hopefully theres plenty more of that to come. I'm also hoping the more senior players, particularly Oakley, Clemence and Howard step up to the mark this season.

I've followed City for almost 30 years and know by now to expect the unexpected and the fantastic days under MON seem like a lifetime away at the moment but i genuinely think we are gonna bounce back and get back to where we belong!

Roll on August 9th!!! :scarf:

yes, good post spiderpig ... and as you've alluded to we have space now to start afresh with new hungary players, and whereas in the Championship you'd get murdered playing gung-ho football I think this season we'll be able to play more expressive football.

Gradel certainly knows the game well at this level and hopefully he'll show his quality again this season, but the key looks to be the organisation on-field that Pearson is putting in place - keep the ball, use it to tire the opposition and break really hard and fast (aka Swansea last season!) ... C'mon City ...

Yeah, it's not as if West Brom got anywhere being the top scorers in the Championship last season, is it?:rolleyes:

I'd like to think Gradel will have a starting place next Saturday. Whether he does will go a long way towards telling us what we need to know about the latest manager.

There'll have been Watford, Charlton and Sheff.U fans who felt the same this time one season ago.

Sorry guys, I know Southampton supporters shouldnt post on other boards but I just wanted to tell you how gutted we were to lose big Nigel at the end of last season, unfortunately our chairman said we couldnt afford to keep him and went for a cheaper Dutch option.

He did a surerb job for us last season and managed to bring self belief to a very poor bunch of players, he got them fit, got rid of the ego's and put a few rockets up various arses.

Think we might be swopping places next season. Good luck, I'll be watching out for your results.
