My work place has just been informed by the performing rights society concerning a licence that is required for employees listening to music on the factory premises.

A licence for the first year will cost in excess of £900.00 which due to the present climate my company is not prepared to purchase.

Therefore all radios in the factory are to be removed from the premises.

There was a lady in news the other day who works from home and gets occasional visitors throughout the day she's got to pay it.

Yeah but to ask a small company to pay just for having radios on when most wouldn't be listening to the BBC stations is taking the piss!

With big companies then maybe its understandable but in a company thats small & now leads to the staff not being allowed to listen to radios while they work because they can't afford too is horrendous. They all pay there individual TV licenses at home so why should they pay extra to have background music at work?

I looked into it when I first started reading up on starting a business & its already hard enough without stupid things like this, next thing they'll be stopping people from listening to the radio's through headphones because the company premises aren't licenced for it, I think its just a step too far personally!

Its just another money grabbing idea from the government thats going to end up being counter productive! I know if when I was working in a glass factory when I was 16 if they had said theres no more radio because they can't afford the licence I would've been beside myself with anger.

Surley the price of a tv licence is offset to accommodate this.

On the other hand it's got FA to do with the BBC or the Government and the money goes to performers worldwide, depending on number of plays I believe

Music Licences

FOR ALL ENQUIRIES REGARDING PRS PLEASE USE THE LINK ON THE RIGHT HAND COLUMN OR ALTERNATIVLY USE THE FOLLWING;

Postal address: Copyright House, 29-33 Berners St, London W1T 3AB

Switchboard: 020 7580 5544 Fax: 020 7306 4455

The Performing Right Society (PRS) is a non-profit membership organisation which collects licence fees from music users, PRS then distributes the money to its members, the writers and publishers of music, and to affiliated societies worldwide.

This is regardless of whether the music performed is live or by recorded means – be it from a television, a jukebox, or through the internet.

Who needs a PRS Music Licence?

• Any location or premises where music is played and can be heard by the public.

• Any premises outside the home, from clubs to concert halls, from discos to dentists’ waiting rooms, and from trains to take always.

• Usually, the proprietor/manager of the premises is responsible for obtaining a PRS Music Licence.

Is a PRS Music Licence required by law?

Yes.

The Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 means that if you use copyright music in public, you must first obtain permission from every writer or composer whose music you intend to play. In the UK, we represent these copyright owners, so a PRS Music Licence gives you the legal permission to play just about any copyright music in the world repertoire. A PRS Music Licence is required regardless of the ownership of any other type of licence.

Do you intend to or currently broadcast music in the following situations, please read the related guidance issued by the Performing Rights Society.

If the government have decided to back this I find it hard to believe they don't gain something from it! Either way if it means some people are now going to have to work in silence they can shove it up there jacksie!

Listen to it using the internet..there you are, problem solved

Can't even listen to my i-pod with external speakers, will have to use headphones which isn't that practical.

 Nevermind.

But was wondering whether myspace is excluded from this as they are free to air?
