#9 Trav's Mix

Due to post tomorrow - short-list of 26 tracks needs to be whittled down. Mostly new stuff - I'd like to introduce some of the younger posters to some old classics, but it seems that the only people who bother with this thread are people who are likely to have that anyway. Kids, there's no helping them!

Will be called - Something old, something new, something borrowed* and some blues.

always wanted to name a compo album that

*ie, a cover version

Looking forward to this mix hopefully will be a few new things on it for me to digest although I seem to be going through some sort of retro phase at the moment.

it's a shame people don't want to pay much interest in this thread anymore just serious music fans these days!!

For a split second at first glance I thought this was an entire mix of stuff I hadn't heard but then spotted it was actually the tracks I was looking at and not the artists!!!! :D

Already a fan of the likes of Jon Spencer and Bon Iver (excellent debut album)

Saw Jon Spencer live, quite by accident, when they supported The Hives at Wulfrun Hall (I think that's what it's called - the one in Wolverhampton).

They were fantastic, but the place was full of kids (literally, many pre-pubescents there) who booed, BOOED!, them to get off so they could listen to/see The Hives. They'll learn (I hope)

1. Black River - Bomb the Bass ft Mark Lanegan

Bomb The Bass eh... well I have to admit I have never really bothered with them I remember the William Burroughs influenced Bug Powder dust from back in the 90's and had the album which was a little bit of a poor mans Massive Attack I had it on tape haven't heard it for years so might have to buy it again it's only about £3.00 so could be a good buy. As for this song I love Screaming Trees and Mark Lanegans voice so this is a winner.

2. Reminisce - Tru Fam

yes yes yes me likes this!!

3. Confessions of a Pig - Monkey

was waiting for the bass to kick in never came bit boring for me I am afraid

4. Shores of Orion - God Is A Astronaut (Mark should like this I think)

ambient guitar instrumentals aren't for me it's ok but why the hell do bands like this not have vocals this would be sooooo much better with lyrics.

5. Head Home - Midlake

This is ok actually I quite like this although it could do without the Howard Moon jazz style solo in the middle

6. Gront Lyse I Alle Ledd - Casiokids

This is a winner!!!! I love this sort of chilled out scandinavain sound I don't know enough about the genre though but it's certainly something I am moving into. the band boat club credit to Fez for pointing them out are brilliant if you haven't heard them.

7. Creature Fear - Bon Iver

I really like the Bon Iver album it sounds like it was made in a long cabin in the middle of nowhere which of course it was a real natural untouched, unproduced sound very very good

8. Continue - Mintel Rose

totally bored me hovered over though about and.... skipped

9. There You Go - Aberfeldy

never heard of them actually liked it quite a lot to be honest

10. Electioneering - Easy Star All-stars (This is the first "borrowed" track - could count as old too)

to be honest I have never thought of easy all stars as anything more than a novelty band dub side of the moon/ radiodread etc its ok just very very average imo sells because of it being covers and not on the strength of the music

11. Cue The Strings - Low

last fm likens them to Red House Painters and Codeine (there album The White Birch is a masterpiece haven't listened to it for years got it on LP need to find this on cd seems impossible) I actually googled Codeine while listening to this track and found them more exciting you will love them I feel if you haven't heard of them this songs ok though just nothing outstanding

12. Unsafe (Inside the Sound of Sleep) - After (This is my "no-one-will-have-heard-this" track)

true never heard of it probably wont again...

13. Long Haired Child - Devendra Banhart (Blues!)

it's ok again just don't think I want hear anymore if you know what I mean

14. River Man - Shawn Lee (More borrowed stuff)

easily forgettable still thinking about codeine actually!!

15. Trouble Come Down - Satchel (old, but gold!)

oh my god.... FLASHBACK I bought this cd when it came out can't remember why think I read a good review somewhere I thought it was a big pile of turd and I remember trying to force people to take the album off my hands but no takers!!! still not that impressed now

16. Hot Shot - John Spencer Blues Explosion (Blues!)

I love a bit of Jon Spencer as an intro to people you should have gone for this beast...

AFRO!!!

One of my personal faveourites low down dirty blues music!!

17. Children's Story - Tom Waits (Not a song, but a nice album ending I thought)

I must admit I know zero about Tom Waits I am sure I should get an album and give it ago but wouldn't know where to start is a nice way to end an album though.

I will certainly be checking out a few more and getting a couple of albums from some of these artists so thank you!!
