C-man Posted 12 March 2009 Posted 12 March 2009 Last night was disappointing for everyone, it's a shame the run has come to an end and I'm sure people might be feeling a tad negativethis morning about the way we played. Anyway, looking at some positive things... I was just looking at Mourinho's interview after the United game last night. United have worked together for five consecutive years. They were a young side but are not young anymore. One way is to spend a huge amount of money, which we know is not realistic in the current climate. The second way is to build a team over the course of time. There have been points this season where we have put out a side with an average age of just over 22, and that's including Steve and Oakley who are both over 30, so I think his comments are pretty relevant to our situation. I know we have several players on loan from big clubs, but if Knowitall is right and we can sign Hobbs permanently, I'm confident about managing to sign players like Gilbert and Martin, even though Tom Cleverley is a long-shot. My point in relation to what Mourinho has said is 'will Nigel Pearson be given time to build a young team and nurture them into a (relatively) successful side?' Will we be able to stave off bids from bigger clubs for players like Tunchev? Has NP got the managerial ability to replicate what MON did on a smaller scale? I'd love to be able to watch a side built over a period of years, like City were in the 60s under Gillies and what Jock Wallace did in a smaller time-frame in the late 70s/early 80s. NP has already showed the ability to find players with talent, albeit rough around the edges, and I think he has enough management talent to nurture them into good Championship players in the way that Brian Clough did with ordinary players at Forest and Derby in the 1st Division. I believe it's just whether Mandaric has the patience and money to back him.

C-man Posted 12 March 2009 Author Posted 12 March 2009 Money? yesPatience? Wouldnt bet on it I wouldn't be so sure about money either. There's a reason he set a March 15th deadline with the season tickets and my bet is that it isn't to tie up a few loose ends before the end of the financial year...
Corky Posted 12 March 2009 Posted 12 March 2009 Mandaric has been better this year, but he's still likely to pull that trigger. Pearson will never feel totally secure, and sections of our fans are quick to jump on his back if he's struggling. I'd like to see the squad kept together for a while to develop. Hopefully it will happen. Good post
