Hitesh Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 Does anyone know how the login and remember me feature works? I login via various Wi-FI's (Home, Uni, Library etc) and everytime I come onto this site I have to enter my username and password despite saying I want to save my login details. Does this mean the IP address is tracked? Or is it something else, and either way, why is like that? Its not a big issue, just a little hassle of logging in everytime time I connect to a new wi-fi!
hairy Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 I know the IP is tracked for being rumbled as Father Christmas last year. However I log in using my work and home PCs both of which automatically login using my stored username and password.
Smudge Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 Someone more knowledgeable than me can tell you exactly but I don't think it has nothing to do with your IP address per se. The browser you use stores cookies and passwords so when you revisit a site, it will give you quick access to that site. Depending on the settings some browsers delete some information as you exit it so check the setting in the browser. If you are running a cleaning program such as Windows Washer, that will erase the "temporary internet files" where your stored info is kept.

Yeah, I understand that process and did think it may be that but all I have been doing is hibernating my computer and haven't been running those kind of programs (I use CCleaner which does a great job btw when I do run it!). And I doubt Firefox clears the cookies as it still remembers me if I connect to the same Wi-Fi but not when I connect to a different Wi-Fi. (Does that make sense!?!)
Smudge Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 Sorry about the double negatives in my response btw, I really don't not never talk like that. Anyhow, you may be right, using a different router will definitely change your Ip address. I'm off to Atlanta tomorrow and will be using my son's internet access so I'll check to see if I have to log in.
Alexikokopops Posted 21 April 2009 Posted 21 April 2009 Whenever I delete my cookies I have to log in again. If I delete my cookies on my home computer I can still log in fine at work and vice versa. Sounds like cookies to me.

Sounds like cookies to me. Don't think it would be because I never delete or remove cookies. Basically, I login at my home and click the box saying I want to stay logged in. And whenever I am at home without changing wireless networks, I stay logged in. But then I take my laptop to Uni, use a different Wireless conneciton and when I go to the FT page I have to login again despite saying I wanted to stay login. So I'm guess it changes per IP address or connection? Just wondering really...

I use my laptop... at the place I call home, I'm always logged in (spare when I dump cookies, etc). When I up roots and camp at my mum's place for a few hours, I gotta log back in again... and then when I get back home, I've gotta log in again. Seems that moving from network to network is the cause. I've not yet found a way to remain logged in, so I suspect it's the forum that's not permitting you to do that. If I'm not mistaken, this changed a while back as it never used to happen... probably right after a forum software update, one imagines.

It's probably so they can track and stop banned users I suspect...
