Mark Posted 3 May 2005 Share Posted 3 May 2005 Wayne Rooney has reportedly been dropped as guest of honour at a top schools match after organisers said he was "not a good role model". The England and Manchester United striker had been due to appear at the semi-final of an English Schools' Football Association (ESFA) contest. But he was axed following excessive swearing in a Premiership clash and allegations over his private life. In February, he was caught shouting the F-word 20 times at a referee. "There is no question that Wayne is an excellent footballer," ESFA chief executive John Read told the Daily Mirror. We felt under the circumstances, over what was being reported, that we could find a better role model But the ESFA and sponsors Coca-Cola had "decided not to take up the appearance" of Rooney at next Monday's under-13s tournament at Middlesbrough's Riverside stadium, he said. "We felt under the circumstances, over what was being reported, that we could find a better role model," he added. A replacement has yet to be announced. Last month, Rooney's lawyers issued legal proceedings over a story in the Sun newspaper claiming he hit his girlfriend during a row at a nightclub. The newspaper claimed the 19-year-old slapped girlfriend Colleen McLoughlin, 19, while at the Brasingamens club in Alderley Edge, Cheshire, on 10 April. Rooney has always strenuously denied the allegation. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/4504869.stm

Steven Posted 3 May 2005 Share Posted 3 May 2005 Who elected him as a role model though. Have none of the organisers ever sworn. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone. On the subject of referees, players need to help the situation as do the PFA, referees and their Association, FIFA, The FA, The Premier League, Clubs, Managers and staff. Frenzied Posted 4 May 2005 Share Posted 4 May 2005 This is similar to the claim by the leader of the head teachers' association that footballers, with the amount they swear, are a bad influence on school kids. The problem with this view is that footballers would have learnt to swear in the playground when they were kids themselves. It just seems to be case of finding a suitable scapegoat for the problems in schools that are much more deeply rooted.
