Tranmere Sack Moore - Bit of shock that!

Tranmere have sacked manager Ronnie Moore in the wake of the club's failure to reach the League One play-offs.

The 56-year-old joined Rovers as boss in June 2006 but attendances at Prenton Park have dropped by over 19% during the last three years.

Moore previously had two spells as a player with the club between 1971 and 1989, and was player-coach and then assistant manager under John King.

A statement said the club felt the time was right to move in a new direction.

Chairman Peter Johnson said: "I'd like to thank Ronnie for his services to the club over the last three seasons and to wish him well for the future.

"We now need to focus on next season and we will start the process of finding a new manager and assistant manager immediately in preparation for the pre-season training which starts in July."

Andy Doyle, chairman of the Tranmere Rovers Supporters Association, told BBC Radio Merseyside he was "shocked" by Moore's departure.

"I am quite shocked and bemused at the statement that has been released by the club as we've just signed a player (Mark Allott) in the last few days," said Doyle.

"If it is a new start they seem to have mistimed it slightly."

Doyle felt it was unfair to hold Moore accountable for falling attendances at Prenton Park.

"I love Rovers to bits and I want the best for them but gates have been falling ever since we got relegated in 2000," he said.

"The gates have steadily gone down. In the Championship we were getting just over 9,000 on average so you can't blame Ronnie for that, it's been declining for many years."

Moore, who has also had spells as manager at Rotherham and Oldham, led Tranmere to ninth in League One in his first season, 11th in 2007/08 and seventh last season.

He had them within minutes of reaching the play-offs when they led 1-0 at S****horpe United on the final day of the season.

But Cliff Byrne scored an 88th-minute equaliser to clinch sixth place for the Iron instead, with Nigel Adkins' side going on to seal promotion by beating MK Dons in the semi-finals before winning 3-2 against Millwall at Wembley.

Quite harsh that. They came very close to play-offs and did considerably well considfering the teams they were up against.

Jason McAteer might come back to join the management team to replace Moore.

Another Chairman with delusions of Granduer I think! They ripped us at their ground last season and had a damn good season I reckon. WTF is this bloke really expecting? Unless hes prepared to splash the cash a lot more then they arent going to progress much further.

Id be pissed off if I was a Tranmere supporter
