Playing at the wrong level

How about this for a fall from grace?

Paul Rodgers

Tuesday 2nd December 2008 - makes first-team debut for Arsenal in a League Cup Quarter-Final.

Taken off at half time. Sent on loan to Northampton where is sent off and generally made to look ordinary by League One players, released by Arsenal upon his return and is now trying to prove his fitness in the reserves pre-season schedule in order to win a contract at Sixfields.

So eight months later...

Thursday 30th July 2009 - part of a Northampton Town reserve/youth team that get deservedly beaten 3-2 by Long Buckby of the United Counties League in the Maunsell Cup Final, essentially comparable to playing centre-back for our youth team and getting ripped to shreds by someone from the Senior League.

Yes, footballers are on good money and yes, they should be paid in accordance with their ability, but something like this must be hard to take. I've seen him two or three times now for Cobblers and I have literally no idea how he managed to ever get any sort of contract at Arsenal, never mind a professional one and then to get into an Arsene Wenger side playing in a major cup competition.

But then we're paying DJ Campbell over £20,000 a week to play against Oadby Town.

Thought this thread was going to be about Dickov then :giggle:

I dunno but we've had a few playing and managing at the wrong level in recent years.

It's not surprising to be honest and you do get a few like that. Harry Worley is another example. These kids get scouted really young because they show potential but some think they have hit big time when they sign professional and hence don't put the hard work it to realise their potential! Its tough trying to break into first team football at a league club and I could be wrong but this guy sounds like he may have been a bit over confident after playing a cup game and then thought he could do the business in the lower leagues only to be found out! Now struggling to keep his foot in the game by the sounds of it!

Its a tough game and needs a lot of dedication from a early age to succeed in!

There are some players that you just watch and think, how the fook did you ever become a pro footballer? The odds of getting even a first pro contract are minute, and some of the ones that do are awful!

As the person who endured an evening in Fez's company watching Rodger's "performance" last night, and will be enjoying (sic) his quality, as well as that of several others, during our forthcoming assault on mediocrity in league 2, I would like to point out that, at no point, not even when we finished bottom of the entire league 15 years ago, have I EVER seen a defender as bad as him. He is that bad. I could reel you off a list of dross (and I mean real dross, not dross of the Elvis Hammond/Jason Jarrett/Andy Johnson variety) that I've had to put up with, but there is very little that reaches to quite as low a depth as that to which Rodgers regularly plummets.

It makes my blood boil to know that Rodgers is as good as we can do.

Billy Mckay on the other hand, now he looks to be very decent...

You should think yourselves lucky...

Good luck for the new season, outplayed us at the Walkers last season, unfortunate to go down.

Thanks, with a decent keeper, a fit forward and a manager with a clue we would've been fine. Sadly failed on all of those counts and several others and are now absolute garbage...

I actually hope LCFC do well this year too..
