"... is the best game you can name, and the best game you can name, is the good ol' hockey game..."

The new season starts tonight with a few good games.

Boston Bruins vs. Washington Capitals: Both of these teams are favorites to repeat as division winners; expect another monster season for Alex Ovechkin. If the Caps can get their goaltending situation straightened out--especially if Simeon Varlamov plays like he did in last year's playoffs--they will be a serious Stanley Cup contender. The B's have got more than enough depth to make up for losing Phil Kessel.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Montreal Canadiens: Plenty of question marks surrounding this ancient rivalry after both teams shook things up in the offseason. The Habs have brought in a new top line after last year's disastrous 100th-anniversary season and Leafs fans can now complain about a brand new bunch of disappointing players.

Colorado Avalance vs. San Jose Sharks: True to form, the Sharks are going to tear through the regular season, take the President's Trophy, and get knocked out of the first round of the playoffs in five games.

Calgary Flames vs. Vancouver Canucks: This is only the first game, but it'll be an important one because these teams will finish 1-2 in the Northwest again.

We'll get the American games on the Versus network here while our Neighbors to the North get the other two on CBC's Hockey Night in Canada.

Alex, my Rangers head to the Steel City tomorrow to watch your Penguins raise their Stanley Cup banner and piss on their parade maybe score a goal if they get lucky. I don't think my boys will be Cup contenders this season.

Looking forward to the new season, although it's going to be hard to defend that Cup for the Pens. I was so excited when they won against Detroit in Game 7 in the Finals - I certainly didn't expect that to happen so soon. Shitload of talent in one single team, I wonder how Pittsburgh's going to cope with the pressure this time around.

Good luck to the Rangers - you'll probably need it, anyway!

Here's how it goes:

For a team who is predicted to go last in the West conference I can not believe the Avalanche beat the Sharks 5-2, Good way to start a season, just hope they can keep it up.

Might try to get to a devils game this season, as have been for the past few (despite them being shockingly bad). Lat season saw them draw 5-5 with the leafs in their new stadium (which is awesome, apart from $7 beer)

Yes, huge win to start the season for the Avs. They're definitely in a rebuilding phase right now, but they've got some great young talent. Matt Duchene could be a big star for them. As for the Sharks, well, they're under immense pressure to finally deliver the Cup to the Bay Area and every slip-up will be scrutinized around the league.

TBH I'm not really too disappointed with the Rangers' performance last night; lost 3-2 at Pittsburgh but acquitted themselves well. Plus Marian Gaborik scored a goal and didn't tear his groin.

This team is going balls to the wall with aggressive forechecking and having their defensemen pinch at the points and join the rush. Of course, they're constantly risking giving up an odd-man rush (and got burned on one that ended with a Crosby goal)--this isn't hockey for the faint-hearted.

The Prudential Center is a beautiful arena. There isn't a bad seat in the building, and it's a quick ride on the PATH train from NYC. It's just a shame that 1) it's in Newark, which isn't exactly the most fun city in the world and 2) it's the home of the Devils and their asshole fans ;)

One of the best times I've ever had at a sports game was in April '08 when the Rangers beat the Devils in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals at The Rock. Hundreds of us Rangers fans took over a PATH train back to the city after the game; pure madness.

I've got to get a few tickets for a Rangers-Devils game at The Rock this season. They meet there on Tuesday, but I think I'll get tickets for one of the games in March instead.

The geniuses at the NHL decided to schedule all three NYC-area teams' home openers tonight. But on the plus side, if I don't make plans between 7-10 p.m., I'll be on my couch, remote control in hand, in hockey fan heaven.

And to congratulate our moderator on his team's win over mine, I bring you...
