Ireland Vote Yes on the Lisbon Treaty

I'm surprised it has taken two attempts for Ireland to agree to the Treaty. We had a seminar one week by a QC in EU and competition law and she listed some of the massive benefits countries like Ireland currently benefit from and these would be enhanced by complete ratification. Your comment went a little over my head, were you agreeing or subtally criticising? :D

People were acting like there was no explanation for the Irish changing their minds on the treaty in a little over a year. Irrespective of whether this treaty is in effect exactly the same, and its not, its pretty obvious that the economic benefits of being a full European member have been drawn out for the Irish in the past 12 months.

Nice idea but it'll never happen because people who oppose the 'anti-democratic tendencies of the EU' are always characterised as small minded, xenophobic, racist, little Englander Daily Mail readers. The fact that large chunks of the left also oppose it is often ignored.

You'd think that if the EU wasn't as over centralising, corrupt and incompetant as it's cheer leaders claim they would be able to argue positively in it's favour instead of just constantly blackening the names of it's opponents.

Thats one of the reasons why I think both the Labour party and the Conservative party should stick to their promise of having a referendum on the issue. It might encourage some intelligent people to put forward some positive arguments in favor of the political evolution of the union, in stead of presuming it will fly over the head of the British public.
