Koke Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 WBA were not that good, but why were we so awful? They are that good. I don't wanna sit here and be waxing lyrical about the Baggies, but they were class. Quite clearly the best team in the league. We weren't that awful, but we were very sluggish and off the pace. Luckily we won't be playing West Brom every week. We just need a few changes in midfield against Plymouth, and stick with the same strike force and we'll be alright.
RowlattsFox Posted 8 November 2009 Posted 8 November 2009 we weren't poor yesterday. we were beaten by a good side, but only just. Anyone saying anything different is over reacting. Agreed. I've not read the post-match thread yet, this is the first thread I've read, so I don't know the general opinion of how we performed. I thought it was a decent performance against a good side, who showed second half how to keep the ball. We were completely over-ran in midfield, unlucky with the injuries but I don't think we had control before that point either. Full backs were too often exposed, especially Neilson who often had Mattock overlapping. We had a couple of chances, and could have got something out the game. The 2 squads were 2 divisions apart this time last year and it showed. Weale -7- didn't see the first goal, and maybe could have done better with the 2nd but kept us in it with some fine saves. Neilson -6- Was ok against strong winger and exposed. Hobbs -6.5- Pretty solid but misjudged a few times. Brown -7- Good. Berner -6- Unfortunate to have to play centre mid but never gave up, missed a good chance on right foot. N'Guessan -6- Good in the air, a threat, bit unlucky to come off but was the obvious change. Oakley -5- Don't recall him doing too much before going off injured, unneeded challenge for the free-kick for their first. King -5- I believe he lost the ball for the second, far too much space infront of the back four even before he went off. Wellens -6.5- Seems to be getting a bit stick, but I thought he was the only one trying to create, not much came off and tried to find special pass too often. Fryatt -6- Willing worker, denied by good challenges in second half. Waghorn -6- Worked the channels well but didn't get much infront of goal. Gallagher -5- didn't know where he was playing, should have scored and all could have been different. McGivern -5.5- Didn't think he was that bad at all, not good by any means but put some decent-ish balls in the box. Howard -5- Caused problems to no reall effect.

Even at full strength we were simply not competitive, we allowed WBA to control the game without any hindrance from ourselves. Our set up was wrong and we lacked intensity and focus, they were our weaknesses, not WBA strengths. The annoying thing is that in the second half, with a badly disjointed side we played with more intensity and passion, almost forcing a result. Our shape was still a mess but the effort and commitment that was so obviously missing early on was present and from time to time we really troubled the opposition!
