MC Prussian Posted 13 November 2009 Posted 13 November 2009 This has made the news in the past few weeks over here in Switzerland. The U17 squad, competing at the World Championships in Nigeria, has come up with some really good results, made it to the post-group stage and have so far eliminated Germany (4-3 aet), Italy (2-1) and Columbia (4-0) on the way to the final, which will be held on Sunday @6pm. There's a new-found pride in the National Squad overall, as these youngsters have performed really, really well up to this point - better than anyone could've expected. We usually tend to be rather rational and cautious about "progress" and "success", but this team has given us some excellent football in the past two weeks (the last few games against Germany, Italy and Columbia have even been aired on national TV). It's a promising sign of things to come. These lads have been playing together since the age of fourteen and come acrosss as a unity, despite what some might call "ethnic blend", some guys having Bosnian, Croatian, Spanish, Portuguese or African origins. Or maybe it's simply because of it. Looking forward to the final game, in which Switzerland will face hosts Nigeria. The Nigerian themselves have beaten Spain 3-1 to get this far, but only today, there's been some debate about the possibility of some players being older than 17, as old as 25. Which could lead to an official investigation and some heavy sanctions.
Miquel The Work Geordie Posted 14 November 2009 Posted 14 November 2009 Apparently at least one of the Nigerian players (the captain - name escapes me) is actually 25 years old. *From World Soccer Magazine
