lou Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 My red finned shark, Tina, is eight years old, which is quite impressive as nothing else seems to live more than a year or two at best. My tank is only 70 litres, but I'd love to have a massive one. The thing that always amazes me is how big the fish will get if they have a bit of space. At one of sister companies' offices they've got a 120 litre tank with fairly bog standard community fish in, but because there's not many of them they're all massive. There's a plec in there that's about 7 inches long, whereas none of mine have ever grown bigger than about an inch and a half before they kark it. Even the neon tetras and platys are the biggest I've ever seen Tina is a great name for a Shark!! My eldest silver shark is HUGE!! Luckily the silver ones are very gentle, in fact the Tetras bully him
Bellend Sebastian Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Well I woke up this morning and 1 of my Guppys had died, she was getting bullied like mad due to being smaller than the rest, still pretty gutted though. Gonna have to replace her soon, also looking at getting a pair of Blue Faced Rams, but I've heard they need slightly warmer water and more regular water changes, lovely fish though. Also thinking about getting a pair of Angelfish, do you have any problems with them Lou? I'd be interested to know how every one else gets on with Angelfish. They're supposed to be easy but I've always found them to be very unrobust, never lasting any time at all. Tina's my only fish with a name because she's the only one that has always been unique. It's a bit pointless giving names to a shoal of tetras

Also thinking about getting a pair of Angelfish, do you have any problems with them Lou? Guppys Ive tried and they always get killed - I think its due to the brightness and size of their fins/tails? Id not bother if I was you. My angels are no probs at all...... they will be OK as long as you introduce them to the tank when they are small themselves, dont buy fully grown ones else theyll eat the smaller fish. Like I said though I do tend to avoid the very small tetras and stick to slightly bigger ones like Congo Tetras. The neons got bullied by the Gouramis I was always under the impression Angel fish wouldnt mix but my 2 are fine and have never attacked the smaller ones, they are massive as well! EDIT the shop I got mine from had Angel Fish in with Neon Tetras so they may be ok?
Samilktray Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Ahhh right, I've got a Fighter and I hear about them having problems with Angelfish alot, although Guppys arent supposed to mix well with Fighters but mine get on fine, my Fighter is very big though. I've never really liked Neons that much, much prefer Cardinals still similar but just something about Cardinals. An 8 year old Red Tailed Shark is pretty impressive Bellend, never heard of them living that long, mines only a baby at the minute but still likes to makes its presence known. Also got 2 Albino Corydoras, probably the most underrated fish around, really entertaining to watch.
Joe. Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Wish my Nanna still had a tank at hers, used to love watching them as a kid. I remember all the little neon tetras used to go missing as the weeks went on, bless 'em. Used to have a plecostomus called Plucky in there as well, never used to see him though the bastard. I think there were a few guppies in there too, can't remember to be honest. A couple of silver finned sharks as well I think. I'd go try get something like it myself but the costs always seem to be too high whenever I've looked before, even for something small.

They swim face to face a lot like theyre kissing... very sweet Il try and get a pic up loaded

Ive only got mine as I was lucky and got given it! You do see a lot of second hand ones for sale though and freshwater fish dont cost a lot
Samilktray Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Id be interested to see pics of the Angels Lou, I'm in 2 minds over getting pair, some of them look really nice, others look quite dull and they never seem that much of an entertaining fish? I could be wrong though.
Benji Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 Ive gone for freshwater/tropical fish to start off with, well its more of a refresher, my Dad was a specialist fish keeper for years when I was younger so this has just refreshed my memory of everything. Got a community'ish tank though, got a Betta in there, and a Red Tailed Shark, which both require a bit more attention than your average community fish, I'm looking at going into Discus towards the end of the year providing I can afford it and have the time and patience for it. Would love a Marine set up in the future but from what I can gather there hard work? Be really interested to see pics of your tank too There's something about Bettas i just love, gracious swimmers. I've got a few neons in my old terrapin tank and 5 endler guppies who look really cool in the light, I only got males because the females are grey and boring, sorry chaps!! (not mine) Will get a pic up if i ever find a camera usb cable
JoeyB Posted 9 April 2010 Author Posted 9 April 2010 lost 2 snails in a day wonder whats up, changed 50% of my water today tho, but i think my shark might have had them
Samilktray Posted 9 April 2010 Posted 9 April 2010 50% water change is pretty big, any reason for that much of a change? And I doubt the shark would go for the snails, never heard of them going for or killing snails, more chance of it being the water, what water did you put back in the tank? Did you treat it before etc?

My nitrate levels were a bit high and it was turning murkey, and i needed to sort out some stuff that was stuck at the bottom of the tank. i never normally do that much, but the water was merky, one snail died before the change and the other died after so i dunno what was up with them!
Samilktray Posted 13 April 2010 Posted 13 April 2010 If anyone is passing through Syston anytime soon, go in the pet store there, got 1 of these bad boys in a heated pond set up... Know 1 of the lads who works there so he was showing us it, feeds on live goldfish, and if you put your hand anywhere near its pond it shoots out to grab it, absolute fucking menace, but so awesome, I need 1.
