Gunmen have killed a professional Swedish football player and another man in southern Sweden, according to police and the player's club Assyriska.

The football player was identified as Eddie Moussa, a 26-year-old striker for the second-tier club Assyriska. The second man has not yet been identified to media.

Police said the men were shot at a place used for card games in the Ronna area of Sodertalje, about 18 miles south of Stockholm.

Police are searching for two or three gunmen who escaped from the scene on a scooter, which later was found burning nearby. No suspects have yet been identified, police spokesperson Bjorn Engstrom said.

The spokesperson gave few other details of the shooting, which also left a third man injured and in stable condition.

"Assyriska is in deep mourning and shock after the tragic news that one of our players has passed away," the club said in a statement. Moussa had played for Assyriska after being trained by its youth activity program from the age of six.

"I don't find the words to describe him as a person or how we feel in the club right now," club chief Aydin Aho said. "He was an incredible guy."

Assyriska said it has postponed its fixture with Angelholm FF, which was due to take place on Thursday.

According to Wikipedia, Assyriska was originally founded in 1974 by Assyrian immigrants, and even though half of the squad consists of Swedes these days, I guess the high percentage of "foreigners" on the team is the root for those ugly racial tensions.

Btw, I still believe Sweden to be a peaceful and highly liberal place, but with the influx of people coming to the country from outside the EU, the Scandinavian spots all suffer from the same fate. Massive growth within a short period of time.

But then again, that's hardly anything to do with this story, more a view on the greater scale of things.
