Government Cuts

Agreed  having said that - what has happenend in Haiti is very sad and we should help where we can but not at the expense of hundreds of thousands of jobs in this country etc etc

So you're basically fine with leaving thousands of people to die, so long as you get to keep your job? A little bit callous, no? Especially given all you've been going on about is complaining about "I'm alright, who cares about the rest" attitudes?

the problem is that 1 in 3 jobs are public sector and this is not needed for the works they do. I know a lad who wont climb the tree at the council because he is to quick and eager at his job and his bosses are not happy bout it.

Aso we spend £ 50 million per day on the EU and we dont actually sell much to them so why not leave and face trading in the north american / canada trading circle.

We also sent China and India a payment every three months of apprx £ 70 million to help with there manufacturing. I own a manufacturing company and could use some of that support.

the bankers are a joke, most councillers are a joke and i know a few. Most the council staff are not pushed or managed properly.

This is our problem.

NO are you serious? Of course peoples lives are more important that is clear, i just believe we should sort out our own country's financial situation before then deciding how much we can help other countries who clearly need help. Me callous, have you met me? NO so shut the fook up idiot

Not sure that is true, but hey my wife got her banking bonus.its so easy to blame the banks.i used to be a manager at one and hated the bank and the way things were done and that includes the lower end staff eg me.i have no reason to stick up for them, but they are an easy target to blame, they are in a no win situation,if they make money they are wrong,if they lose money they are wrong.Although it is a parnership,no one has batted an eyelid with John Lewis bonuses of 15% when the bottom line wasnt that good. The banks have lost thousands of jobs at the lower end in the last 18 months,so it is also them that suffer.

I assume this is a bit of bait for the bankers like me to nibble on? You do understand the situation isn't quite so clear cut as that, right?

To both of you, I understand and don't mean it like that. I too worked for a bank in the past and in no way can you blame the lower rank and file of employees. Banks do a necessary job and their employees are generally top notch. When I say bankers, and when I made my point I actually thought of you James cos I know your line of work and hoped you would realise I didn't mean it like that, I mean the fat cats at the top who quite knowingly manipulated the situation.

Many of the people I used to work with have lost their jobs because of their actions whilst they continue to get bonuses. But as Thracian argues, if people can earn that kind of money, fair play to them...

No wait, that's wrong.

sort our own back yard out first, makes me wonder who would bail us out if we were in trouble ?

Really? Care to explain why? And if you were to expand your time-frame a little you'd see that the proportion of public sector jobs in 1992 was 23.1% (under a Tory government), whereas now it's 21%.

I would like to see your source for that statistic.

you clearly arent a public sector worker are you? work in that industry before you make judgements - i know - you dont

I haven't made a judgement at all. I don't understand how public sector workers are going to die and asked how it was going to happen.

I was giving you the opportunity to enlighten me and I'd like to see an explanation before making a judgement.

I do apologise sir, i will try in my best (usually not good enough) way to explain. The cuts are having a indirect and direct effect on front line staff in such that jobs that were being completed before by say civillian staff are no longer being done as some of their jobs have gone, of the remaining civilian staff, they (the government) are talking about cutting their wages (some i know by £300 a month plus). This cut in wages will envitably lead to a deterioration in the quality of service performed by the civilian staff both directly to the public and front line staff. Also Front line staff are reducing in numbers mainly at the moment due to natural wastage and partly as some civilian staff are being replaced by front line staff. This therefore has the effect of reducing numbers of front line staff available to contend with a whole host of dangerous issues to varying degrees during their shifts etc. I could give some real examples but i fear for my job personally if i was to do so - so forgive me i wont explain further, suffice to say i think this might of given you a small insight into where i am coming from as i am sure you are a very intelligent person (unlike me  )

Cant see anywhere on Carlito's Way's post where he says he is fine with it when people die? You dont know him, dont judge! I know him, he cares more about other people and does a difficult job helping others so i think you can pipe down!

Despite your self deprecation, it does make more sense now.

My tunnel vision led me to believe that you were saying that because people may lose jobs/money they may die - that was where my mistake was. If I understand more clearly, you are intimating that due to cuts in critical areas, certain public sector workers may become more vulnerable when dealing with dangerous situations. This makes absolute sense and I can relate this to front line workers in some high profile public sector roles as well as the less news worthy ones such as mental health/drug workers.

Your point is valid and makes sense and I sincerely hope that your fears do not become reality.

Thank you and once again i am sorry for my slightly abrubt original response, im glad this has explained things more. I realise in the scheme of the whole world at the moment, my concerns are quite a way down the list (of importance) as other people have already kindly pointed out. I genuinely hope some peace and harmony comes to those in other parts of the world at present.
