I think the song you're thinking of is Mammy by Al Jolson (from The Jazz Singer, I think). I've not spent long looking to see if I can find it as a free download anywhere, but Amazon have it to download here.

if there is a decent version of the songs you want on youtube , you can convert them to mp3 at places like this

Youtube conversions should be used as a last resort, the sound quality comes out awful when played through a half decent sound system.

I just tried this site and I got the song called "To My Mammy". Not sure if the quality is good enough but that might be my pc or just because it's a very old recording.

You have to right click the green link and save that way for some reason. If you left click it just takes you to a page that doesn't load. When you right click, hit 'save link as' and it should auto save as mp3 format sound to your desktop. (that's with firefox).
