Sparky Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 Scott Parker has confirmed that he snubbed a move to Tottenham to join Newcastle. Parker has signed a five-year deal at St James' Park, with Newcastle paying Chelsea £6.5 million for his services. Everton and Tottenham were both keen and some reports insisted that Parker would opt to stay in London with Spurs. However, Parker says the draw of Tyneside was too much for him to turn down. "Everybody knows about Spurs, but I have chosen Newcastle United. That says it all," said Parker after sealing his move. "I could have stayed in London and kept my family down there. "This is the club for me. "I know that other clubs were keen on me, but as soon as I heard Newcastle were interested there was only one place I was going. "I know some people say that Newcastle may have under-achieved last year, but they got to the semi-final of the FA Cup and the last eight of the UEFA Cup, and in my eyes - and a lot of people's eyes - this is still a massive club. "The stature of this club is massive and I really have a high regard for the manager, Graeme Souness. "He is one of the reasons I have decided to come here. He has been unbelievable in all this and so too has the chairman (Freddy Shepherd)." a good signing i say , a quality midfield player and should be on the fringes of the england squad
C-man Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 I think he's a good player, but i think £5m would have been a more accurate price tag.
AcidRoyal Posted 15 June 2005 Posted 15 June 2005 scott parkers quality- will do newcastle the world of good- maybe even a sneaky european spot season after? How much is he getting a week?
C-man Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 at chelsea it was £55,000 a week, it will be nothing like that at newcastle i dont think
Nationwider Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 Apparently they've matched his wages. £55,000/week for someone who is not a regular international and played very little footy last season. Parker could have gone to Everton, where he would have got Champions League football, been part of (at the moment) a far better team with (IMO) a far better manager. But no. He took the £Â£Ã‚£s. He should fit in well at Newcastle.
Guest Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 I wonder if a year of doing very little will have any impact on his career? It's bad enough coming back from a lengthy injury, but if you've been fully fit most of the time.....
Oli Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 I heard he was on £50,000 at Chelsea and now on £55,000 at Newcastle, Everton apparently offered him the same wages.
Dave_7 Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 i think 5 millions a lot. yes hes good but thats a lot of money for him
Anish Posted 16 June 2005 Posted 16 June 2005 Newcastle have enough midfielders without him surely? Butt, Ambrose, Jenas, Dyer, Faye, Bowyer, N'Zogbia (sp) and now Parker? Absolutely ridiculous.

Absolutely ridiculous. 124096 With 4 of them being linked with different clubs. I bet they will only have about 6 midfielders by the end of the summer. Ambrose is almost a cert to go Charlton and Everton apparently want Butt. Jenas linked with Arsenal and Bowyer deffinatly leaving so Souness reckons.
Ash Posted 17 June 2005 Posted 17 June 2005 I think he'll do well at Newcastle , Great ability but never had his chance at Chelsea.
Collymore Posted 17 June 2005 Posted 17 June 2005 I think he's a good player, but i think £5m would have been a more accurate price tag. 123633 I hate seeing the figure £5 million, It reminds be so much of the Akinbadbuyi nightmare <_<
