Libertine Dream Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 First post so please go easy lads! I was thinking about this on the way home and I think last season is still a problem. We made an awful start last year because we had a poor squad. This meant Sousa was gone and Sven was in. He had to work on a lot of things to get us up to scratch and he had to do a lot to get the squad near to the required quality. This meant a lot of loans throughout the course of the season. It came to January and all we signed were players on loan or on short term deals which would expire at the end of the season. As a result we had to go out and sign numerous players in this window which leads to cohesion problems. What we should of done is started building for this year in January, this to me shows some naivety from the owners. If we'd paid for permanent deals in January, last year would have acted like an extended pre-season. We could have then added a couple more in the summer to complete the squad. These would have bedded in quicker and the blow would have been softer. It would have also given sven time to work out tactics and strategy as he wouldn't have had one squad last year and have to change it this year. Also I'm getting really frustrated with people jumping on players backs as soon as they put a foot wrong. I thought StLedger was good tonight, (better than mills on saturday) but people shoot him down for one mistake. Bamba made many mistakes today but they just weren't as costly. Reminds me of the Ricardo situation. I also think today emphasises the reasons why we should have coughed up the money for Maynard rather than messing about. Him and Nugent could be quite a team in my opinion and if you added Townsend or Weiss or Kebe on the wing and played quick attacking football we could be a formidable force. I think this team needs to play quick football as that appears to be what they want to do, it just seems they're being held back a bit.
The Doctor Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 I do agree, I think Sven rushed in January to try and deliver promotion last season, which admittedly nearly came off, when he should have declared last season a work in progress and built to hit the ground running this season.
Heart-Shaped Fox Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 I do agree, I think Sven rushed in January to try and deliver promotion last season, which admittedly nearly came off, when he should have declared last season a work in progress and built to hit the ground running this season. I dont think Sven has learnt from any of his numerous mistakes last season, hasnt shown any signs so far. And promotion didnt nearly coem off last season, getting as high as 7th after beating soem average teams before rapidly going off form isnt what I'd describe as 'nearly came off'. The stat which says it all about Sven last season for me is that when he came in we were 8 points from the PO's, and when the season ended we were 8 points off the PO's. Tells the story really.
Larry_LCFC Posted 17 August 2011 Posted 17 August 2011 Im not liking this one bad game and you're dropped thing. Will just bring player confidence down to an all time low. Mills, our captain, has shown us he puts himself on the line to win the ball. Yeah he didnt do well on sat but he shouldnt be sidelined. Same with SSL - he did crap tonight so will he get thrown on the bench. We need to find a team and stick to it otherwise there will be no gelling whatsoever.
Raw Dykes Posted 18 August 2011 Posted 18 August 2011 While I agree, I also think that if you're ever going to make wholesale changes to a starting XI, it should be after a totally abysmal performance, such as the one on Saturday. I just hope Sven can find a winning formula fairly soon, and then I hope he can stick with it as much as possible, especially in defence. I really hope he's learnt not to chop and change the back 4 around each game once he's found a defence that works well. I can't say I'm confident he has, though.
