Ric Flair Posted 22 June 2005 Posted 22 June 2005 Has anyone heard what Levein's done to the academy this summer? He was quoted as saying he wanted to sort it out over the summer as he was concerned about the lack of talent throughout the age groups. Would be interesting to hear if he's done anything about it, it would be rude if he said all that without doing **** all about it! Foxes Trust, do you have any news on this?
Hitesh Posted 22 June 2005 Posted 22 June 2005 I hope he does do something with the academy. We have struggled to produce talent over the past few years but considering the financial situation its no surprise. You cant really blame MA for that because he had to concentrate on the first team but i was surprised that the Dir. Of Footy, Dave Bassett didnt do much. Tomi Petrescu went home and i dont really know whats happened to the other talents. Richard Stearman looks promising but think back to a couple of seasons ago when we had the likes of Piper, Stewart, Heskey, Heath, Wright all coming through the ranks. We havent had many players of that quality come through in recent season. I know that there have been youth players coming through but they havent been of the same quality. It doesnt help when the youth coach keeps changing either. Young players need stability within the club to progress and that certainly hasnt been the case over the past few years. So, hopefully Levein will sort it out and we will have a great future. It will take time of course but at least its in the right direction and with the club being more stable it will definitly help.

Let us know if you hear anything else, I don't suppose you know if we're 'close' to signing any new players? Any news if Levein will be upping the offer for Scott Robertson?

Would find it very surprising if we were targeting a midfield player, that is not our understanding
Thracian Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 yeah 125950[/snapback] Selecting the right youngsters for graduation through the Academy is not as hard as is made out. Some are born to be footballers (Peter Shilton, Dave Gibson) but others, people with the right, single-minded attitudes can be made. By far the most important "development tool" for aspiring footballers is to surround them with good players. Levein should delegate one or two internationals at a time to work in with the juniors. When I got too old for football and turned to squash we introduced people like the young Leicestershire Senior champion Simon Taylor and the equally youthful Cambridgeshire-based champion Steve Gray to our ranks to inspire and encourage our youngsters. Result, in two years, was that the club provided the entire Northamptonshire junior team, several East Midlands representatives and a couple of full internationals - and that from a village!. The knock-on was dramatic. New junior member were immediately in the company of top national and regional players. They were surrounded by people with the right skills, setting the right example and working out in the right way. It became a conveyor belt. On occasions the club could field 15 junior teams. There were champions in every corner and these graduated to become seniors who, during that period, took the club to a level among the top 15 or so in the country. Football is no different because youngsters will copy what's around them. Surround them with quality footballers with determined no-corners-cut attitudes and they will soon be inspired to reach that level themselves. Then the club just creams off the best.

Jonbluefox9 Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 All I know from talking to relatives of academy players is that Levein was looking to bring in more player for the under 19s downwards to create more competition for places. Financial cutbacks have meant by the time the lads have got to the under 19s there's only just been enough that are in the right age band to play and the rest of the team has had to been made up of lads from age groups below. To put it simply in certain age groups we have a lack of players so by the time they reach the last few years of the academy there's not many left.
Sam Posted 23 June 2005 Posted 23 June 2005 We've not signed any young players yet have we but overall I'm quite happy with the purchases as they do add depth to the squad and put some pressure on some players. We still need to build a stronger team though and look to invest in a few strikers and defenders.
