sphericalfox Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 I had the misfortune at eating at a restaurant last night which can only be described as an Italian tapas place. A million a one tasty sounding dishes on the menu, all sounding as good as the other, but in child size portions. I ordered 3 dishes, and finished them in 5 minutes flat. each £3.95 each. Am I a tight fat bastard, or do I expect more than that from my meals? Do you? I left both disappointed by both the quality and the portions and pretty hungry. Give me a proper meal any day. Not over-priced joke portions!

sphericalfox Posted 23 October 2011 Author Posted 23 October 2011 Probably shouldn't have gone for tapas then I didn't choose the restaurant unfortunately. The original restaurant (which was a carvery for info) had a one hour wait! So the ladies I was accompanying decided they wanted Italian. I didn't quite grasp the menu at first, then it dawned on me that I was in for an expensively disappointing and hungry evening.
Rincewind Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 Not heard of Italian Tapas. They are usually Spanish. Tapas means roughly translated 'Snack' The spanish tapas consists of cheese/squid/ ham/ potatoes and they are ordered in twos and threes. A lot of Spanish bars have them. They are not big portions. A bit like sharing platters.

A bit like sharing platters. It wasn't specifically called 'tapas', I was only using it as a means of describing the dishes, variety, and size. It was an Italian version. I've never seen this type of place before or eat in one before, and won't be returning any time soon.

Rincewind Posted 23 October 2011 Posted 23 October 2011 That Google's good isn't it? I never googled. Been Madrid and Barcelona away from the tourist areas. Also did a Spanish course at night school ( still cant speak the language) and they went through all the tapas names. There is a Tapas bar on Granby Street. Only been in once though and Mexican restaurants probably do them as well.

sphericalfox Posted 23 October 2011 Author Posted 23 October 2011 Where is it? What's it called? A place called Pesto http://www.pestorestaurants.co.uk/deansgate-menu/
Saxondale Posted 24 October 2011 Posted 24 October 2011 Tapas is traditionally free for drinkers in Spanish bars, hence the little 'taster' size portions. It's been corrupted into a paid-for thing. The key is to order lots of different things and accept that it's quite a costly way to eat out. A bit like Yo Sushi - I always end up sending a fortune there.
Rincewind Posted 24 October 2011 Posted 24 October 2011 You may still get free stuff in the out of the way places but they are catching on with tourism. The British equivalent is the free nuts and crisp bowls on the bar. The H&S have done away with that. Understandable in a way cos you dont know if the person that last had their fingers in the bowl had just been for a shit without washing their hands after. A man went into a bar after work and ordered a beer. As he started drinking his beer, he heard a female voise saying seductively, 'You've got nice hair'. The man looked all around him but couldn't see where the voice came from. A minute later he heard the same voice saying, 'You are a handsome man.' The man was really puzzled by this so he asked the barman what was going on. The barman replied, 'It's the nuts - they're complimentary.'
