Work begins on elite sport centre . Saturday, October 22, 2011 Leicester Mercury Follow. Building work has started on a £1 million sports centre designed to train the next generation of Olympians. Loughborough College, which is developing the Elite Athlete Performance Centre, is hoping sponsorship will now come flooding in to help it fund the project. The centre will provide accommodation, coaching, mentoring and physiotherapy for 20 talented 16 and 17 year olds across the UK each year. It is set to open in June and would be the first of its kind in the UK. Construction company ISG has begun stripping out The Gables, in Forest Road, Loughborough, which will be redeveloped into the centre. But since a bid for sponsorship was launched in June, the college said the response from businesses and individuals had been "slow". Elite athlete education and welfare officer Chris McGeorge said: "In terms of reaching our target, we are down at the bottom, but in a way we expected very little until things started to happen there. "This is a great opportunity to be involved in the Olympic legacy that everyone is talking about and to change some young people's lives." The initial stripping out and electrical work is being paid for by the college. It is inviting businesses and individuals to contribute, including buying naming rights to the centre for 10 years, sponsoring one of the rooms or making a one-off donation. Former Leicester City FC chief executive Barrie Pierpoint is responsible for fund-raising. Rob Jarram, a sports development officer at the college, said: "Past Olympians such as Kelly Holmes and Tommy Godwin have said how they wished there had been something like that when they were younger." The college hopes the centre can emulate the success of its National Volleyball Academy, which opened in September. Mr McGeorge said at European and world championships, other countries' athletes were two or three years ahead because they had been living and working together as a team. Athletes would need backing from their sport's national governing body to be offered a place. They would be provided with advice on diet and recuperation and have access to sporting facilities at Loughborough University. Initially, 20 athletes would live there but this would increase.
