Kitchandro Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 He was on loan to a League 1 side last season and proved himself. Why send him on loan again? As others have said other than Beckford and Nugent we've only got Schlupp and Howard - both of which offer something different. He should be getting on the bench, we don't need 2 midfielders on the bench because they all do pretty much the same thing, some better than others. We don't need a goalkeeper in truth seeing as he's a liability. Schlupp's got dangerous pace and has shown he can finish, he can make an impact. I can see Nigel getting rid of him like he did Gradel, which would be disappointing.
Narborough_fox Posted 3 December 2011 Posted 3 December 2011 Would of been a better option than Gallagher today. Think he should get a start next game, play him on the wing and let him run at defenders. Much better than Danns and Gallagher can do.
Thracian Posted 4 December 2011 Posted 4 December 2011 And why should he when Nugent has been one of our best players and Beckford seems to have turned a corner in terms of his attitude and effort, the goals will soon flow for JB if he keeps it up. Or by the possibility that he isn't good enough for more than a short cameo here and there yet at this level? And you claim to not be a cynic? Beckford has so far played well under Pearson, even if the goals are still an issue. True, he hasn't been great, but neither has Schlupp and the manager will also judge them in training - is it that hard to believe that maybe Beckford is doing better in training than Schlupp? Bollocks would you, you still insist Schlupp needs to be given a chance, likewise with King. To quote an old saying "Nice guys finish last" - that selfish streak is a great trait in a striker, so long as it is honed correctly and of all the people to be able to do so, I'd back Pearson to get Beckford to apply it properly. Experience is pretty key now, we fell behind target due to a poor start and now need to get rolling as fast as possible - choosing older, wiser heads with good knowledge of the league would be a better choice in that than a bunch of raw, young pups. 1) Not once have i suggested Schlupp should generally be a starter so where the hell Beckford comes into it i don't know although, now you mention it his "turning the corner" in terms of attitude and effort has only doubled up on sod all with Sven and is still way short of what I'd want for a centre-forward. But his transfer fee ensures we'll persevere with him so it's pointless thinking any other way. 2) Almost every time I've seen Schlupp get game time he's made things happen that has threatened a goal and you only need to look at Spurs for evidence of just how valuable it is to have as much pace in a team as possible. 3) Beckford has not played well under Pearson. He's just played better than he did for Sven and that was so badly it was embarrassing. 4) Schlupp should be utilised for half-hour spells off the bench because he's fast, dangerous and has exactly the selfish streak you talk about. The difference is that Schlupp also has the awareness to use others when they're better placed. I'm surprised anyone bothers running off Beckford for the chance of them ever getting the ball. 5) Don't give me the "experience" crap. We've just been run into the ground by a team of relative youngsters at Hull and all because our captain and one of our most experienced players committed professional suicide - and not for the first time. The same "experience" probably cost us the game at Birmingham too. Oh yes, and we've gone down the route of experience for years - even to the halcyon days of Horsfield, Cadamarteri and that midfielder from West Brom who was never fit. It was like watching oil tankers in a sea of speedboats. We're too set in our ways, too slow and too ponderous as a team. Won't people ever see it? We need speed, stamina, imagination, belief, commitment and the ability to pass at pace. It's not a matter of age either. Konchesky's no youngster, nor is Dyer or Nugent. Schlupp ticks more of those boxes than many in our team and that's before he's fully shone up as the finished article. And where does "a bunch of youngsters" come into it anyway? We're talking about one. Just like we talked about "one" with Gradel before we threw away both his goals and a proper return on his development costs. And now it wouldn't surprise me if we are just as wasteful with Schlupp. We're just so desperate for promotion that we don't build anything properly and it'll be the same this season. By the time we've even got a proper team together it'll be to late. And don't mistake me. If we had fast, reliable alternatives sitting on our bench who had the record to demonstrate they were a better bet than Schlupp I might accept his redeployment but we don't. We have no real pace on our bench at all.

Clearly as a person who loves the youth team, and bringing through decent players, you have been less than vocal about the investment of the young internationals, and homegrown players that have been recruited into the youth setup, and will be a great boost to our teams in the years to come. Positives Thrac, try at least for once look and discuss the positives. It's not hard. I know it's against your common nature, but try to stop being so negative and look at a longer term picture. Shakespeare will surely add to the collection of talent that Sven, uncredited for, has started to build,
