MattGamble92 Posted 11 March 2012 Posted 11 March 2012 A lot is said about the quality of our players. On paper we have a better side than Reading. I'm very confident of that. But the one key factor in yesterday's game and the second game of the season was the shape of their side ,and how easily they were able to counter attack us. It wasn't quite as bad as the game at the KP for me, but then again not much could be. Certainly not any substantial difference. The ability to really counter attack while not looking vulnerable at the back is something i haven't seen from us in years, apart from the brief spell under Sven where we demolished Donny 5-1 and the Derby game in that period. Eventually the side became a bunch of highly paid layabouts and it's no different now! The saddest thing for me was i remember the Reading game last season, ironically of the same scoreline, and i was thinking exactly the same thing. How important it is to keep that shape and have a side the looks like a proper team. A year on and we're in exactly the same position and needing a huge improvement for next season. Im sick of saying next season! Will we ever do it again? Ever?
FrankieADZ Posted 11 March 2012 Posted 11 March 2012 its not always about the individual player in the team....its the general team itself. If we go back to the MON era now or the Swansea team in the prem now, it doesnt always matter on paper....its about on the field.
Fox92 Posted 11 March 2012 Posted 11 March 2012 It's manager isn't it. Look at Brian Clough, one of the greatest managers ever. He didn't really have a fantastic team at Nottingham Forest, in particular, yet all the players that played for him said he had that skill of getting in your head. Something I saw Sunderlands goalkeeper say yesterday about Martin O'Neill on Sky Sports. And take O'Neill for example, the Leicester team he made wasn't full of "stars", yet he turned them into good Premier League footballers, who all worked hard. Regarding Reading, they set up as an away team, even at home. Thats why they are so good on the counter. McDermott has always played like that, they are pretty quick as a unit. I was thinking yesterday, we have never beaten McDermott since he has been manager. He beat us in his first season 1-2, then under Sousa/Sven we lost 1-2 and 3-1, and then this season we lost to them 0-2 and 3-1 again Talk about a bogey team.
Lineker's Left Foot Posted 11 March 2012 Posted 11 March 2012 Well.... we did the double over Reading in my first season watching City in 1987/88 - winning 2-1 and then 1-0 at home. Think Ian Branfoot was Manager then.... bet we'd lose to that team now.
Basingstoke Fox Posted 11 March 2012 Posted 11 March 2012 I swear Reading had never beaten us until approximately 2004? Can't believe how bad we've been against them since then.
