Zingari Posted 24 May 2012 Posted 24 May 2012 In spain foraging for mushrooms is very popular, but every year people die doing so, so be careful. The rule of thumb is if you have any doubt don't pick them, learn what types are safe, and nice to eat, and learn what to avoid, some of them are very similar, you can get guides. http://www.foragingg...nous_fungi.html check this, one of them says can cause a bad a reaction if consumed with alcohol, others are just downright deadly. Even the name " brown roll rim" is enough to put me off eating those
Captain... Posted 24 May 2012 Posted 24 May 2012 Even the name " brown roll rim" is enough to put me off eating those There are some others in the non edible section (other fungi), I am not sure what the difference is between non edible and poisonous, unless they are actually impossible to swallow, that have a particularly unpleasant name and appearance. Dog Stinkhorn, doesn't sound very nice either, I assume it is named after its appearance (for those whose mind doesn't work like mine, by that I mean it looks like a dogs erect penis after being stuck up something's bottom).
Rincewind Posted 24 May 2012 Posted 24 May 2012 There was a stall in the inside market (Leicester) that started to sell wild mushrooms. Not been in for a while so don't know if they are still there. Looked pretty expensive for my pocket. How many wild plants are edible? Just got me wondering. Some people complain about not being able to afford to buy food yet there are acres of fields and woods with plants. I suppose you just have to know which ones to look for.
BoneDog Posted 26 May 2012 Posted 26 May 2012 Sea side foraging looks great, would love to do it. I`v caught the bug. Just popped down the ponds for some (insert name) bull rush type things!?. Apparently, the bottom of the stem is a lot like bamboo shoot, and it will be going in a stir fry tomorrow. What's that stuff they pick and put in tins? I think it's black and I'm sure they find alot of it around the Bristol channel and Wales. Maybe Ireland. It's supposed to be well good for ya! I had a site bookmarked and was going to buy some but I've lost it. Think it was an Irish or Welsh sea salt site. Foraging is the future!
OzFox Posted 27 May 2012 Posted 27 May 2012 They banned foraging in Epping Forest years ago. Too many people cleaning the place out, including restaurant chefs. Of course, it's virtually impossible to police so I doubt if it's stopped anyone doing it
Rincewind Posted 27 May 2012 Posted 27 May 2012 Why not. If you are charging £20 a portion £20 profit is better than £19.50
stourbridgefox Posted 27 May 2012 Posted 27 May 2012 I grow some of my own food. So I kind of forage in my garden sometimes.
Rincewind Posted 27 May 2012 Posted 27 May 2012 My pot plants are coming along nicely. 2 chives, 1 sping onion, 1 basil and 1 coriander Looking forward to the onions.
