rossporterlc Posted 10 July 2005 Author Posted 10 July 2005 yeh but any number divided by itself is one, and any number divided by 0 is infinity
New England Fox Posted 10 July 2005 Posted 10 July 2005 and any number divided by 0 is infinity 135762 No its not, and 0 isn't infinity either
Deathside Posted 10 July 2005 Posted 10 July 2005 Try using Calculator in Windows 0/0= Result of function is undefined.
john_lcfc Posted 10 July 2005 Posted 10 July 2005 well 0 represents nothing so there is nothing to divide so 0/0 = 0 i think
Deathside Posted 10 July 2005 Posted 10 July 2005 Whilst your are all pondering this perhaps you can also tell me which is the first day of the week?
john_lcfc Posted 10 July 2005 Posted 10 July 2005 Whilst your are all pondering this perhaps you can also tell me which is the first day of the week? 135807 sunday as the week starts and ends with a day off.. though i see monday as the first day personaly
toonboy Posted 10 July 2005 Posted 10 July 2005 0/0 is what is called an "indeterminate" quantity, which is to say that its value depends on what the situation is The Bible clearly makes the Sabbath the last day of the week, but does not share how that corresponds to our 7 day week. Yet through extra-biblical sources it is possible to determine that the Sabbath at the time of Christ corresponds to our current 'Saturday.' Therefore it is common Jewish and Christian practice to regard Sunday as the first day of the week (as is also evident from the Portuguese names for the week days). However, the fact that, for example, Russian uses the name "second" for Tuesday, indicates that some nations regard Monday as the first day. In international standard ISO-8601 the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has decreed that Monday shall be the first day of the week. I have the knowledge

I have the knowledge 135811 i just googled "0 divided by 0" and got exactly what you said
Hitesh Posted 11 July 2005 Posted 11 July 2005 In any fraction i used the good old method of an apple pie. If you have 1 apple pie and have 2 people its half each! So if you have 0 apple pies then you cant divide it by anthing so its 0. You cant divide something that isnt there!

rossporterlc Posted 11 July 2005 Author Posted 11 July 2005 yeh but if u divide something by an ever decreasing number then the final answer is getting bigger and bigger therefore dividing by 0 must give a maximum value of infinity
Thracian Posted 11 July 2005 Posted 11 July 2005 is 0/0 1, 0 or infinity? 135745 I'd say as many as you like. Or none at all. If you view nought as material then there is one nought in nought. If nought is abstract (which it is in my view) then it is as many as you like or none.

But if you are saying what i think you are sayin that then 0 isnt one of those ever decreasing numbers! Your concept is right but 0 isnt classed as a number type thing, whereas what you are saying is relevant to something like.... 0.0000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000001 Its hard to explain and im not the best at maths but im sticking to my original "apple pie" theory.
